Default Is it possible to nerf your Internet speed...

....with a software application like Speed Up My PC and other such items? You know, when you can 'Optimize Your Internet Connection'.

Before I ran one of these, I was getting a d/l speed of 800+kbs on a site known for its regular speed. I'm now lucky if I can get anything near 100kbs.

LOL & don't even get me started on my torrent speed.

I have regulary run an online speed test and I'm consistantly well down on my previous results.

Are there any areas to check on my system to see what might be happening.

Running XP Pro & Lan Connection to router.

Thanks in advance.

Have you contacted your internet provider? They should be able to run some tests, then you would know if it's their fault or yours.

My internet provider promissed me 10mbit down. But at a time I was only able to download at a speed of 200 Kb/s.
I thought that I had a virus on my computer that slowed down my internet traffic, but when I realized that I couldn't find a virus on my hard drive I called my internet provider.
In the end, it turned out to be their fault. Funny thing was that I was to lazy to call the telephone support. So I had that download speed for 4 months...

Ok, I'll give them a call.

I suppose, as it was so sudden that it could be a problem at their end.

Thanks.

May the days of 56k and less never return.
Horrible times, but I am expecting a degradation soon in the future since I am moving back to Poland.

I upped my internet cause i found with the cheapest option i would only get 30kbps DL MAX so changed to the next option and now I get round 150kbps when DL, yet at night it drops to 22kbps. Net provider states the option i chose i can get speeds of 100 to 500kbps yet i never get pass 150-180kbps

As for this Torrent, i fail to see whats so good about it, tried one night and their was over 2000 seeders and 74 leechers i was DL at 7kbps and uploading at 18kbps? Never bothered after that, is it becuase the further away you are the slower your go.

Beware of shareware and free trial programs. Alot of them include spyware, and it's the spyware that slows down your connection. It's so busy sending info on what you're doing and where you're going on the net, it ends up hogging your bandwidth.

Sorry to bump but this might help other people.

It seems that my software optimizer had changed settings within my router and although I scanned the settings for anything that had changed the only solution was a factory reset of my router.

I'm happily back to my optimum speed.

Yep - That is pretty slowww!!!

I have 3 mbps down, and I have the option to move to cable for 8 mbps (12 burst), but the DSL is just so much faster as far as latency is concerned, and it is not a shared pipe. My ping times in online games are consistantly much better than my cable friends. So that is my trade off - get cable if you download massive files all day long, or get better ping times on DSL. Considering my 360 kbps (3 Mbit connection) is not too bad for downloading most things, and I have a 768k up pipe, so I'm not complaining much. And I'd rather have better ping times than download speed, so I am sticking with DSL till my 30 MBit FIOS (Fiber Optic) arrives next year.

I do find it rather odd that I can walk to Microsoft headquarters from my house, yet we are far down the list to have FIOS arrive??!!!

Yes you can. Saw someone with 45 mbps down and up (T3) for free. He set his office up next to an ISP and talked them into running a wire through the wall directly to their switch! He just bought them donuts occasionally and they were happy with that!
