Some (newbie) questions

Me again, I've got a couple of questions I need answered. I've done some searching but havent found any answers to these questions:

Huge European Liner
I've seen it in the SHIV museum and in the regonition manual, but I have yet to see it in-game. As far as I know it's the largest ship in SHIV, and I would like to try and sink it.
But where can I find one? Where is the best place to look and which year?

Radar not detecing aircrafts?
My radar perfectly detects ships on long distances but it has never detected an airplane. I checked when docked and I do have one surface search radar and one air search radar.
So, shouldnt an air search radar detect airplanes?
Also, the radar seem to shut itself off all the time, which makes me miss all the contact reports.

Torpedos malfunctioning, even with the "dud torpedos" option off
A while ago I tried to make a keel shot, changing the depth of my torpedos so that it would go directly under the keel and thus exploding underneath the ship.
The problem is that they went very close under the keel without exploding. And they were set on contact/influence.
How close do they have to be to detect the magnetic field of the ship?
I only made one try so I might have fired the torpedo to low, but from the free camera view it sure looked like it went as close under as it possible can.
During another attack, I tested fireing my torpedos deeper than the default setting, deep enough to make them hit the hull of the ship a few meters under water, but not deep enough to go under the keel and miss.
But when the torpedo's smashed into the ship's hull they didnt explode, instead they just bounced of the ship's hull and started sinking to the oceanfloor...

Does the famous seabattles exist in the career?
I started a new career and changed the starting date so I would arrive at Midway around june 4, 1942.
I got a radio message about a battle taking place around Midway (as in, The Battle Of Midway), but I didnt see anything unusal around Midway. So my question is, does famoues battles exist in the career?

Hi Slizen:

Huge European Liner-
They are in the game. I sunk two on the same patrol. They were cruising along heading south in the South China Sea. I think each one also had a Destroyer escort and a smaller troop ship with it. It was early war, 1941 and I suspect they were headed towards Singapore. Ya just gotta get lucky and stumble into them.

Radar not detecting A/C-
This is a bug. It used to be a bit better in v1.1 but when they tried to fix the air radar also detecting ships, it just got messed up even more. It never works for me.. I haven't even been installing SD radar since it doesn't work right now. Wait for a patch.

Torpedo Malfunctions-
I think the contact/contact&influence settings are reversed. Set it to contact and see if the magnetic is set off with a test.

Sea Battles-
Some of the task forces in the big battles are present. I've not gone looking for them but I know people have found the Japanese task force NW of Midway and attacked it, as an example.

1. There is one in the small task-forces that are running "fast". Usually two boats being protected by 4 or 5 escorts, one will be a huge old or modern, and the other is a smaller boat of some sort. Rarely you can find singles. Look for the convoy runs just south of Japan. You want small task forces running "fast".

2. The problem is known. It is an assortment of bugs.

3. The dud torp setting affects torpedoes where everything else is correct, but the explosive or wiring is just bad. It also prevents premature detonations. You still have to worry about impact angles. If you hit too low on the keel, the torpedo may just bank off. As for mag-dets, you have to get within 2 meters of the hull to trigger it.

4. Yes, but not exactly. There is a huge glut of boats spawned in the area -- I find massive task forces and lots of small task forces. If you hit up one of the historical battles, you're bound to get contacts.

I'll only be able to answer 2 of your questions...

I spotted and sank a Huge European Liner south of Japan on my second patrol in 1943. It was part of "convoy" with another smaller liner and 4 DDs. The convoy was trucking a long at a high rate of speed, so I almost didn't make the intercept.

The SD radar is what would detect aircraft. This radar type does not have a station and you will only get an announcement of a radar contact and it will only be displayed on the nav screen. SD radar is currently broken in the latest patch so it won't detect anything.

SJ radar is the surface search radar, which will detect shipping. However it is also bugged where it'll only detect objects if your boats course is between 270 (west) 000 (north) and 090 (east). If your boats course is heading south, the radar will fail to pick up anything.

Thanks for the replies.
I did some torpedo tests in the 2nd tutorial on the stationary merchant ship.
I didnt notice any difference between contact and contact/influence. None of them exploded even if they were bare centimeters from scratching the keel of the merchant ship.
The only way I could get them to explode was by direct contact.
Now I dont know if maybe the sub or torpedoes are to old or something to work with a magnetic influence detonator, but if so, why even leave an option between contact and contact/influence?

I think it's something that needs to be fixed. Even when I switch to Contact only, I still occasionally get premature magnetic explosions long before it's anywhere near the target. :hmm:

Install the Flavoured To Taste mod, and there is a workaround that let the SJ (surface) radar detect aircraft as well as surface contacts, seeing as the SD (Air) radar is broken in 1.2. Also this fix will let you detect contacts no matter your heading, as opposed to the broken SJ in 1.2 that will only work when somewhat heading north.

As for Huge Eur. Liners, I've found them plentiful. Well, you know, not all that uncommon. I might just be lucky though. I currently lurk around Celebs sea -> Solomons in mid to late 42, operating from Fremantle.

Just FYI, the mod has been renamed, to better represent what its aims are. The mods name is now "Trigger Maru". In realitly Trigger Maru version 1.0 is acutally FTT 2.6
