Default Evasive Maneuvers?

Hi all. I just got the game and love it, although still getting used to how to operate. I just tried quick mission because I didn't really get career mode (even with time compression, i get to the target and it says engage enemy, but I can't find any)anyway, back to quick mission, I did Midway (I think that's the first quick misison, whichever the first one is, correct me if i'm wrong) and after sinking one ship, a lot of them come after me. I've tried silent run, going really deep and slow, and using starboard and flank evasive techniques at flank speed, but they all still find me and follow me so I either die down there or i come up and get killed. I can't ever get back up to fire torpedoes, and even then I don't know how far away I should be before surfacing and firing, because i'm always really close to my hunters. Please help!

Are you patched to 1.2? Did you go under a therman layer?

Welcome Aboard Mister Bond.....

The key to evading escorts is depth and speed - and patience. After you fire your shots - go to silent running - and as you dive be listening to see if you cross a thermal layer. If not - then your going to HAVE to stay at silent running and creep off.

Best bets - go as deep as possible, set your speed to 1 or 2 knots and be at silent running. Since SH4 doesnt tell you when an escort makes a run on you - your handicapped. (There is a mod that fixes that somewhere - its a great help for some!) Once you know DC's are on the way - then and only then do you hit high speed with a change of direction - if your afraid they will bracket you.

2 good tactics - head in the direction 180 degrees from where the convoy was headed - this adds their speed to yours in opening distance. Helps avoid detection. Second - go slow and have your helm over about 20 degrees - confuses the escorts - harder to judge a circular course than a straight line for where to drop DC's. Remember - depth is your friend - and under NO circumstances should you ever try to come up and get another shot in. A sub caught shallow by escorts is nothing but a target.

Patience is the biggest key - running fast or trying to fight back will get you killed.
Good Luck and Good Hunting!

wow captain, thanks a lot. that really helps. one question though, how do change the actual knots of speed? I've only seen the meter where there is ahead one third, two thirds, etc. Is this what you're talking about?

Click just under the dial and it will change to a knotmeter. The same is true for the heading and depth gauges.
