So, as with all news items, an analogy might help.

This is like Sam's Club, garnisheeing your wages, and WHEN you want to spend that money they are "holding", you can just become a member of their club.

It doesn't matter if you go to some chic club in New York with some garage musicians, record that on your cell phone, and submit it to a satellite radio station or put it on pod-cast. The RIAA will bill you for their royalities when you post it. Even if the garage band isn't signed with any music production company. They could have a Pioneer DVR-112 DVD burner they're using to make DVD+R audio disks -- the RIAA will be able to legally file in civil court for the perceived royalities, and that case will be supported by Federal Law.

That is even more outstanding than back in the 1960's when AT&T was putting up L4 towers across America in an effort to make a mesh transmission network. All at tax payer expense, and about 80% have been sold for a quarter of the construction cost (a few are actually still used for various telecommunication means).

In related news:
Pornographic companies are going to start charging for masturbation, even if you're whacking it to Judy Garland in "Over the Rainbow".

If that means what I think it means

man, why do some already bloated fat cats feel they have a right to have a digit in every pie, even if it doesn't really belong to them? What's even worse is the fact that some other greedy ***** are willing to support them and write it into law that all of them have to get a slice of what they never were entitled to from the outset...

If ever I needed confirmation that Babylon needed to be raised to the ground in a fiery maelstrom of burning destruction, well I guess this is as good as any.

It's a tough issue. Everyone wants to see the artists get their money, but no one wants to feel exploited by the RIAA.

Yet another completely un-innovative plant to allow artists to make money.

Is it just me, or does this sound like them saying "you better use union workers or you gonna get your skull cracked"?
