Diesel Engine Problem
Hello,
I tried to search for this particular problem inside SH4 as well as an answer. I am unable to find anything in regards to this problem and could use your help. Here is my problem. The sub's diesel engine gets damaged, the repair crew fixes the diesel engine and tells me the damage has been repaired, while on the surface, the sub will not move at all. The only way to get to a port is to dive to periscope depth run until the air is exhausted, surface, dive to periscope depth again and repeat this process until I get to port. I also need to keep an eye on my depth, if not the sub will head for the bottom. Keep in mind there is “NO DAMAGE” shown. Thanks for the help

There are evidently some issues with the repair screen not reflecting accurately.
I guess you could roleplay it in a way and figure they "fixed" it in that there no longer on fire or leaking, however they were damaged to a point where they would not run. I feel for you its going to be a looooooong trip. Arent those solar powered rechargers a miricale ? |

Damage is still sketchy at best. I'm thinking the diesel were completely destroyed yet the crew said they patched them up. There really is no indicator of what you have and do not have. The deep red vertical line next to the affected machinery is about all you have. If the deep red is all the way to the top, you are pretty much sunk. I suspect your red lines were to the top or close to the top meaning, we can put bubblegum on the hole in the crankcase to stop the oil from leaking but they will not run...oh it's repaired now
![]() Damage screen needs work for sure. I just deal with it and do the best I can with what is shown.

Hi,
I’m not out of fuel. Also, wouldn’t I be unable to recharge the batteries if the Diesel Engine was damaged even though I was told it was repaired?. I would think the batteries would be dead and unchargable if the Diesel Engines were DOA. Which means I would no longer be able to travel at periscope depth.

Hi,
I think I know the answer to this question, but I'll ask anyway. Is there any way to radio for a tow back to port?.

nah for the moment your batteries will charge with or without the diesels. kinda cool, but not realistic. now my question for you is what is your crew status? if your crew is exhausted things wont work right. just curious have had it happen to me too.

Dunno if this will work, but maybe it's worth a shot: Open the cfg files and the saved game files (both in your Documents SH4 folder, not the main install folder) and edit them in notepad to realistic repair time - false.
It's a long shot, but if it doesn't work then you'll do no harm. I did a similar thing by changing the unlimited fuel to to true when I got stuck with no fuel 1,100 miles from base, as to do the old 'battery crawl' 1,100 miles was just gonna take forever and in reality I'd have radioed for a PBY to drop off some diesel. |

Maybe a nice feature...but completely unrealistic...it was never done in r/l.
Of course no skipper ever ran his boat out of fuel either...heh. |

Sorry to resurrect this folks, but has this issue ever been fixed? The exact same thing has just happened to me on my third patrol with SH4. Took some hits from an armed merchant and 1 diesel was damaged to about 40-50%. It was repaired and now I can't move, however I seemd to be happily steaming along at flank before the repair was made.

Couple of things come to mind, check your fuel level, check you havent left the crew at general quarters for 48 hours, check you havent reached a last waypoint, check you dont have damage to the prop shafts. Even though the boats had 2 to 4 engines the game always treats them as two. Recieve damage to both and its game over. By the way the 'solar charger' was revoked a long time ago. |
