Embarrassing Newb Question

I picked a name for a submarine I admire quite a bit and I can't even get through the first tutorial. Great! I hit f3 to plot the course but I keep running into land. I plot a straight course to the designation but it doesn't seem to work. What am I doing wrong? First of many questions and all answers will be very much appreciated. The knowledge base here is amazing!!!

On the compass icon in the lower toolbar there is a return to plotted course button try that incase you have changed course manually.

if u keep hitin land then come out of harbour manually. Its safer. Also if u plot a straight course just make sure that there are no islands in the way! No worrys this was also a common SH3 problem to RIP the GREY WOLVES

Zoom in on the map! You will get detail of the landscape. You can plot course from here

The Mouse Wheel is your friend on the nav map.

I remember my first patrol in SH3. I opened map, zoomed out and placed a waypoint outside Kiel harbor and clicked. I expected a trained AI helmsman to know how to miss the docks
