Martin don't hold me to this, but I think I read on here somewhere that if you stray too far from the Binocular icon once you reach it, SH4 "resets" the counter that determines when your patrol is complete.

For instance, if you have to patrol the area for 48 hours and the counter is up to 36 hours (only 12 hours to go) and you then sail too far from the icon, it resets to 0 and you have to start again - sail back to the icon and patrol another 48 hours. Don't remember what the distance was, maybe 50 or 100 miles.

Like I said, maybe I'm getting confused with something else? But I think that's what I read. Wouldn't hurt to draw a 50 mile radius circle around the patrol area with the compass then stay inside that circle for 48 hours. See if the mission ends after 2 days.

The second is to sink a certain amount of tonnage. Usually it is 10,000 tons.

I would assume that the 10k tonnage is calculated after the first objective is done.
Hmm, OK thanks Gildor. Guess that makes sense, at least from the viewpoint of a bureaucracy.

I didn't sink any ships when RTB, was low on torps and only 2 likely merchant contacts, both at night and in a rainstorm so heavy I couldn't even ID the target much less get a solution Several convoys reported, but far enough away I didn't have the fuel to make the run and still get back to Midway.

I guess then to maximize Renown one should ignore most targets of opportunity until the "Patrol" part is complete, and save the fish for Part 2?

Default End Patrol

Manila base captured by enemy, so I head for Midway. Get there not allowed to end mission just to refit. I've spent over 48 hrs around the star, sank 25,000 tons of shipping. There are no friendly bases within a 1000 miles. Cannot end mission

What if you patrol the area for 48 hours and spot nothing ?

Send a patrol report anyhow ?

You can go to Jawa in the south. I did when Manila fell It might be closer.

I was ordered to the East China sea after taking my Photo's in Japan, after I completed that task I was given the objective to sink enemy merchants. I did that then I decieded to head down to that base near Jawa to refit. On the way down I was ordered to go back to the China sea. So I went back there after refiting and sunk some more ships and headed to Midway. Remember to reload your torps before leaving port and then refit again to fill those now empty slots.
I went into Miday Harbor and docked against a bulkhead. When leaving, I was exploring the Island east of Midway on external view, and suddenly I heard a screeching noise like I was dragging bottom or something. THen suddenly my PC shut off.
My graphics became corrupt after this. Not just ingame but post boot as well. So I swapped out my vid card with one I had in stock and all is well for now except a loss in framerates from going from an X850 to an X800.
With the repairs complete, I set out from Midway again and headed back to Pearl. I earned myself a Victory Cross and some medals and promotions for my crew for getting over 100k. I'm using manual tageting but with map updates on.
Now I'm trying to figure out who I want to give all these medals and awards to.
I wish there was better documentation in this area and the overall crew management.

I finished my first patrol last night. I was ordered to patrol the Marshal Islands because "it was suspected that the Japanese might be using the islands to build up another fleet". I sailed over there from Pearl, got in close to about half the islands in the grouping, found nothing, and eventually headed on to the patrol location. I hung out there for 48 hours, found nothing, then headed on west. I saw a lot of contact reports southwest of Guam and Saipan, so I went to that area and sank a couple of ships. After a bit there, I was down to 55% fuel so I decided to push it a bit and sailed over towards Formosa. Along the way I sent in a status report, and got a new objective with it: Patrol the Luzon Straits.

This area was a lot more active; I had many hydrophone contacts there, even stumbled across a "task force". What a joke; one destroyer and two medium gunboats. I sank the destroyer anyway and sailed off. A number of single and tandem freighters sailed through the area, both large and medium, and at the end I came across another task force composed of a large passenger ship and 4 destroyers. I sank the troop carrier with 2 torps from 5500 yards. In the end I was out of torpedoes and dangerously low on diesel; I had to put in at Midway to refit. I made it back to Pearl on February 12th, 2 months and 2 days after leaving.

As a side note, I got the message "We're out of diesel!" when I was at 4% fuel remaining. The final total was an absolutely insane 56,900 tons of shipping; the sub aces list when I made it back to port only listed two others, the highest of which was just under 10K. About half the ships I sank were either chasing down a radio contact or my air search radar picking up a surface ship and about half were things I picked up on the hydrophones, so even adjusting for the unrealistic targets that way I sank way too much shipping.

On a further side note, the air search radar does detect aircraft, but it displays them as surface contacts. It doesn't seem to work under heavy time compression. The hostile air contacts I got on my way back from Japan were all visual sightings by the watch crew rather than radar contacts, however it picked up the aircraft around Pearl and Midway just fine at 2048x speed.

Why when i've done photo recon then ordered to patrol and sink shipping and sink 28,000 + tons and make status report with said tonnage and 0
torps left no return to base order. So I return to base and being tired I
end patrol and it says I failed to complete mission. WHAT GIVES!!!!
