Reminds me of those thieves that take everything except your toothbrush and camera.

You get your film developed several weeks later, only to find by means of the photos, that your apparently "untouched" toothbrush has been places you don't want your mouth anywhere near.

If he was vacationing in Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and the United States he probably got his friends to do it because he couldn't really afford the trip. He'll use the insurance money to pay off the credit cards. Give it a little time then his mates will bring the stuff back.
