I had the same experience once, but I found out I had rammed a very small island:rotfl:. Sometimes you cant see those islands when you look at low zoomlevels...

well ... hitting an island would make my sub run aground and not sinking 503 feet and then implode ... nor was the battlestations turned on ... running the changed lamp hud color and battlstations and silent running mod on all HUD stations ... so no ... i was not on battlestations alert nor did i run into so suddenly submergin island ... i reloaded the game several times .. tried different route ... then my game crashed

Hi Skipper,
I presume that you were running on the surface. Might you have hit a mine ? The water you were in wasn't very deep, so I'm presuming coastal waters. If you have a mind to experiment, you might want to go back to the previous savegame and re-run it, but when you get near <how bl@@dy close is "near" ? > you might dive and go slow/silent to listen for one of them d##n submarines. Could'a been a sharp eyed IJN sub-driver or a rookie US sub-driver. Apparently when you're surfaced, sonar doesn't work (because of too much surface return probably), so you wouldn't get any warning of a torpedo in the water from the sonar operator. My money's on a mine though. You'll get 'em next time, Old Dog |

I had that happen a number of times, but it was my own fault. I had "tweaked" the sub's speed up past 120kts, which let me get from Pearl Harbor to Tokyo in a single day. The problem was that instead of steering like a slow moving brick it was now steering like a fast moving brick. When I went to make a turn the boat flipped over in the water and sank sideways down to past 200m of depth before managing to right itself back up again. Alas, it was too late, and the pressure hull collapsed despite my attempts to blow the ballast tanks.
![]() Since then I've toned it back down to about 75kts, which is safe so long as I'm not submerged when I turn. When submerged, anything past 25kts will cause the sub to dive down when it tries to turn - normally not a big deal but in shallow waters this can turn into a sudden crash. |

Sheep, reload the save game, go into the crew management screen, and have a look at it. What you should see is that one row of crew has a darker background than the other two. Mouse over the other two rows of crewmembers, and see what it says their "activity" is. If they're off duty, it should be either "maintenance" or "sleeping". If they're not doing that, then you're at Battle Stations.
