I haven't had this happen - I've fled back to the Atlantic until the next patch - but it sure sounds frustrating. Please check this thread for the same topic:

feature that kills the game for me. they stress the RPG element with the crew on the back of the box then make you start over as soon as you get attached to your crew and boat.

I too am enjoying the icey atlantic again until this is fixed

How many patrols have you done before being retired?

Well, we all like sims and this supposed to be a sim so IRL sub captains did not go much past 4-5 patrols some more and some less. Desk job after that. So to simulate a sub skippers career, you get retired. Usually not on your first patrol

Is there any difference if you choose for example 1941 for the start of your career?

I think the answer to early retirement is as plain as ..well.....

look:

http://www.valoratsea.com/subton1.htm

The reality is people are scoring more tonnage in one patrol then then alot of the top boats did their entire career.

If your scoring 50K+ tonnage a patrol (thats alot of renown added up btw), of course their going to retire you. You become and asset and your loss would be determental on moral, not to mention lost experience. A skipper who did that well, they'd be making him an instructure at submarine school so instead of just one Tonnage king, they get alot of mini tonnage kings.

edit: but another truth here, besides the uber tonnage, is they rotated skippers after so long anyway. Just look at the skipper listings for individual boats:

With my first career I was retired after 8 patrols with a total of more than 230,000 tonnage.

In that career I commanded 3 boats, started with a Tambor, then got a Gato and finally a Balao but for only my last patrol .

If you check this file CareerTrack.upc in the savedgames folder (in C:\Documents and Settings\...\My Documents\SH4\data\cfg) you can check your current Rating value, I guess that if you have a high rating you will have the chance to do more patrols (my final rating was 14).
