Default Are missions supposed to last so long time?
OK my 1st patrol , almost successful (48 000 tons but out of torps-many duds), takes too much time.my mission is to to go patrol in a high enemy activity area. i went to the binucular logo and patrolled there for a day, another day, another, and another...still nothing...i can't seem to finish the mission objective. any help please?
BTW im a huge fan of SH4 just got it today and i love every single thing about it.the bugs dont bug me

Keep HQ informed of your status. Send regular status reports back to HQ.

Search patrols last 48hrs and destroy missions have minimum tonnage required.

I am still hesitent to send contact reports from my SH3 days. Always afraid of the dreaded "Be More Aggressive" message... I'll have to start doing this in SH4.

Thats because you have a large amount of contact data in the message log. Do the change to your contact range file so that you only get info for close contacts (like 250nm) and you will not get the message log filled up.

While were on contact reports, what is the criteria needed for sending a contact report? I've only been able to send one before which got the reply to engage escorts. Really cool.

However since then no matter how close I am to a convoy nothing happens when I try to send a contact report. Status reports are sent fine.

Whats the low down?

I think the only requirement is that it be in visual sight in order for the contact report to be sent.

Hmm, something was fishy because last time I had a clear visuall on the escort and half the convoy. Something must have been borked. All well, no worries if it's an intermitent thing.

I have done 6 mission so far, and apart from 1 were I never reached my patrol area (star) used all my torps. I went back to WM and topped up, out again still never made it to the PA, but sunk more ships, 76,000+tn, I went back to PH and just docked I had been away about 3 months.

On average, I go from PH to MW on Flank, then its 1/3 all the way to Japan. This take on average from PH to Patrol Area, 17days + 17days return leg, I usual patol for about 2 to 3 weeks. In all on average (no back to MW for top up) I am away anything from 48 to 55 days.

Yeah, it's crazy. I got 36,599 tons on my 2nd patrol from Pearl to East China Sea. Had 2 objectives:

Deploy to East China Sea - Complete
Engage and destroy enemy merchant shipping - Incomplete

Results were:

Merchant ships sunk: 7
Warships sunk: 1
Total Tonnage: 36,599

I thought, "Huh??!?!!" I engaged and destroyed all kinds of merchants but that part was imcomplete??? How many tons do I have to sink???

Can only figure it was because the kills were en route to patrol area, and not IN the patrol area? Fact is, the only contacts I had in the patrol area were 2 DD's that forced me to crash dive 5 or 6 times a day - not a merchant in sight! I'd get radar contact on the DD's, dive, they'd go on about their business and leave, I'd surface then they'd be back in a couple hours - rinse and repeat for 2 freakin days...

Strange thing is though technically I "failed" 1/2 of my mission, I got the CMOH!!! (Actually the "Victory Cross", I'm using the Real Medals 1.01 mod - guess CMOH replaces it?)

The sinking part of the Search missions is part 2 of the overal mission.

The first objective is to get within a certain distance if the icon. (It is listed as 150 so I assume that is KMs, so about 80 nm or so)

The second is to sink a certain amount of tonnage. Usually it is 10,000 tons.

I would assume that the 10k tonnage is calculated after the first objective is done.
