Default Think I'll stick with SHIII after all...

Tried SH4 today and I must say that aside from the fact that I get an unplayable fps with with P4 2.0g 768MB ram X1300 setup, it just looked blurry to me. I was actually looking forward to going back to the pacific but the blurry graphics just hurt my eyes too much. Its not the grainy picture, I dont mind that, its something else. Was there a setting I missed? Ph well I gave it a try. On the shelf for a year or two untill I can upgrade. Im sure its just my computer but untill I can afford a better one, its back to my trusty ole IXC. Home sweet home.

If you mean the refresh rate. Makes the screen pulse. It can be interpreted as blurry. I had this problem with the default settings.

If you open the ingame graphic settings / game resolution, you will see the 60hz refresh rate. Try uping that to 70 or 75hz. This will get rid of the pulsing effect. It may place a higher demand on the vid card reducing smooth perfomance in outer views though.

Try different setting to find that happy medium.

Make sure that in the ATI control panel "Texture Preference" and "MipMap Detail Level" are set to "High Quality".

The "graininess" you describe sounds like the lens filter option... It is supposed to lend old movie style ambiance to the game. I don't care for it myself so I leave that option un-checked.

Still, graphically I'm not very impressed with SH4 either. With my 8800GTX, frame rates are not an issue even at max settings, but the game seems to suffer from a serious case of the uglies. Pearl Harbor is 10 times uglier (plain sloppy) than any port in SHIII. The GI's walking around the harbor (or sometimes in the harbor) are wearing jap uniforms and rifles with US helmets and can cover 100 yards in about 3 steps. Sailors on board the docked destroyers are wearing IJN uniforms. Honolulu is a jumbled mess of generic (Japanese looking) buildings plastered together in a no sense manner. Streets go through buildings. Foliage is jagged and ugly - Nothing makes me believe that I'm in Hawaii... Everything but the ships themselves are a step down from SHIII.

Even the water which I have heard so many good things about is a big disappointment. Sure, the translucent effect is pretty cool, but the water texture is way to shiny and has too much texture for the lacking AA graphics to be able to pull off.

While I'm at it: The crew: They are opaque (unless I turn off environmental effects which makes the graphics suck even more), they have ghostly solid brown eyeballs that are always staring creepily at me like zombies. The Khaki uniforms are wrong (and shiny) and the officer/chief's caps look like golf hats.

Other than these things the game seems ok...

Try the Omegadriver, an optimized version of the standard ATI driver:

Default Playability

I guess the landscaping and the AI of the extras (crews and what not) need to improve.

Other than that, the game's fairly playable, giving you the pacific theather versus the atlantic in SH2 & SH3.

On the other hand, they did put attention into details on those ships.

1 step at a time I guess, 1 step at a time.
