Default "Belly" shots no longer work?

I remember in SH3 you could set your torpedo to explode as it passes under the ship. I've tried it against a Mogami, which has a draft of 14.4 Ft. I set depth to around 17-18 and exploder to contact influence.

Mate, if you're using the "dud torpedo" option be sure that early war US torps did not work that well.

And be sure to aim slightly higher (in the Mogami's case: at roughly 12ft or so) than the ship's draft.

The problem is usually not that the torpedo's don't work, but that they "drop" after leaving the tube, hence why you need to compensate for roughly 2/2.5ft.

No, I'm not trying to directly hit the ship, I'm trying to get the torpedeo to explode once it gets directly below it.

I know, that's why I stated you should compensate: the thing will only blow up at a certain distance from the hull. I'm unfortunately not sure what that distance is currently.

I'd say that the thing will blow up within a ft or so from the hull, if you're lucky, but thus far my own experience with breaking ships in two is a mixed bunch: sometime properly aimed shots don't do a thing, and sometimes that shot that should've never hit in the first place breaks a cruiser like a cracker.

The magnetic influence detonators on American torpedoes were quite horrible.

I've only been using contact on mine, as the few times I tried magnetic, they almost always blow up far too prematurely. So prematurely I think the enemy crew don't even get wet from the explosion.

Yeah, I don't think the person that coined the phrase "spray and pray" was thinking about spraying water over the Japanese.

Ah well, at least it seems to work sometimes.

Not sure how well its modeled in SH4 but the magnetic detonators were aweful in US subs and the contact detonator was just as bad. In fact, on a US torpedo a perfect 90 degree angle shot usually was a dud because it would crush the detonator so a less than ideal angle was, well, ideal. One sub fired 16 torps at a Japanese merchant:all were duds or premature explosions.

In the practice mission (no 3 I think) I've been practicing with the mag. detonators and they seemed to work for me - this was with V1 though, not sure I've tried it v1.1.

Usually I fire a spread, and the few times I tried the torps all detonated. This was on all realism except external view (so I could see the torps) and auto TDC (since I was getting the stadimeter crash).

Is the torpedo depth setter in Metric or Imperial? (Feet or Meters?)

On the early war torps, the magnetic detonaters were junk. They would prematurely explode often close to the sub giving away the subs position. Your best bet is to use the contact detonators, firing so the fish hit the target at an angle.

It seems the composite ships are immune to magnetic detonators?
