Hmm i think it looks like a Brit S Class but not 100%:hmm:

Edit: Sigh, I forgot the number one rule for submarines: if it looks weird, it's Dutch.

Dutch K IX of Holland type (K VIII class, technically), 1923. As to the "whose": its captain changed a bit too often, and I don't know when the picture was made.

The Aussies more or less acquired the sub in 1942, some info (in English) can be found here: http://www.dutchsubmarines.com/boats/boat_kix.htm

Spot on ComradeP. We Aussies called it HMAS K9 and she was damaged in the 1942 midget sub raid on Sydney Harbour whilst tied up to HMAS Kuttabul which was sunk in that raid. Never really made it into the war whilst owned by Australia.

I kind of had a mental picture of a dutch submarine that was made out of wood, with a little wooden periscope.
