ArmA uses Fade, yes. It was so funny reading a thread started by some pissed off guy, where he told of inaccurate shooting, and at some point turning into a seagull!

He got banned straight away, I think.

That is one cool copy protection. Imagine turning into a seagull in a war simulator. I would have looked hard at my beverage cup, and wonder who wanted me dead.:rotfl:

Didn't try Arma yet but been playing OFP since years (just updated last mod yesterday...) without a CD in drive (I buy all my games but I like to keep them in the state I bought them ) and I still can hit a rat's butt at a fair distance with an M24 or M16ACOG...

Oh, that's just cruel Neal.

I think I will start using my Starforce DVDRW as a skeet launcher. At least get some use out of it.

Seagulls were in OFP originally - when you die you can fly around the place as a seagull. It's a bit of a change compared to the usual dead cam in most FPS's.

So, presumably he died (perhaps due to his pirated copy, more likely sniped by a terminator AI) and hence the Seagull episode.

Actually, I think what's a lot more likely is that the leaked version may not have been the (complete, final) gold version, or was somehow botched.

Ah well. I hope the patch doesn't work for these suckers, too :p

Fade just like other copy protection systems such as starforce which royally screwed my system up doesn't work.

The first game i can recall with Fade was Operation Flashpoint. Just like all other forms of copy protection it was cracked even before release.

Given the patch is being released only 3 days after the game release it'd hint in fact that its entirely bugs and more to the point KNOWN bugs that the developers knew about way before release and had been working on for months.

I know the forum hates talk of cracks etc but in my view all copy protection affects are legit owners. Just about all games are "released" and copy protection patched out by various groups often before the official release of the game. Due to having several computers here and not a lot of space i routinely use No-CDs for some of my games.
The only copy protection thats fairly effective and likely to remain so are online serial verification used for games like the Battlefield series and the like. Yes you can stay play single player without issue but these days multiplayer is where all the fun is.

Anyway, im convinced what we're seeing here are bugs, hence very fast patch. I dont believe SH4 has fade for that reason. Hell, even if it did have fade given the number of real bugs one of the unnoticed bugs could be it triggers everyones game to fade, legitimate or not!

As for patch not working on pirate copies, it'll stop it working probably for an hour. By that time someone will have the no-cd out. Yes it is that quick for them at times.

Some publishers make it easy : you have to enter the install key and you can shelf the CD until you need a reinstall ( I'm thinking of Lead Pursuit Falcon 4 AF or THQ Company of Heroes for instance which are not second zone games)

I know of it, but I fear it's cringeworthy to me based on the extremely cheezy trailers I've seen, and the lack of historical authenticity. I know it's based on Frank Miller's "300." I know it's got as much to do with the battle of Thermopylai, as Lord of the Rings has to do with medieval Europe. But it's just a total waste to make a movie based on infantile fantasy-perception of Thermopylai, when the real story is far more fantastic. They of course have their artistic rights to malign major historical events in such a way. And hey, it can even be done in a good way. But if it's not done in a good (non-cheesy) way, I won't refrain from criticizing it. They do take a lot from the real story, such as the comment of "Our arrows will darken the sky" -Persian emissary. "Good, then we will fight in the shade." -Dienekes. So in some ways they steal whatever they can get their hands on, and take some parts from history. They want to make a fantasy-movie, but take dialogue from history, because they can't write anything better than Herodotos. While other parts of the history are considered too boring, so they mix in orcs and armored rhinoceros, monsters basically.. Infantile if you ask me. An infantile movie made by an infant mind. If someone makes a movie based on a historical event, I feel they would find the real story far more fantastic, if only the director and writers weren't . And having Persians as "bad guys" is ridiculous. That they look like Orcs isn't worth comment. The ignorant director is even on record stating that he's gonna make a sequel movie about these "bad guys."

Cheezy:
Watching Leonidas yell "SPAARTAA!" is first of all cheezy hollywoodism, and totally opposite of how real Spartans behaved, they were known to be low-key and "laconic" (a modern word, but based on Sparta's homeland "Lakedaimon"), yet intimidating in their own peculiar way.

Cringeworthy:
Xerxes II is portrayed as Negroid with piercings, no beard. He, of course, was Caucasoid (Iranian), with a beard. Piercings. The rest of the Persians are shown as orcs.

Armored war-Rhinoceros.. More like Lord of the Rings...

But.. straying off topic.

Saying a bug is due to FADE is a great propaganda tool to play down the real bugs.
I think.

Yea thats what stopped me from going to see 300. (that any to save money)

Sparte was a glorius city in its own right, it doesn't need some fantasy crud to get any respect and admiration.

(sorry for going OT)

As someone stated earlier in another thread,...the best copy protection is a nice detailed manual and maybe a paper map or something. Perhaps even a can of sea gull crap to pour on your monitor to aid the in harbor immersion. Extras! WOOHOO!
