Default stadimeter help

Hey guys when it comes to the stadimeter I'm not sure I'm lining the correct part of the ship with the waterline (in dw and sh3 i always get wrong ranges). I know that the mast is the part you want to line up with the waterline but maybe what I think the mast is, is wrong. I got this picture off of http://jtmcdaniel.com and this appears to me he lined up the top of the stack with the waterline. I always thought of the mast being the highest point of the ships superstructure. I would of lined the "mast" right behind the bridge up with the waterline? Am I wrong?

That pic is accurate, the mast is the tallest structure on the ship, and allows a better angle and more accurate estimation. In the pic, the waterline on the top ship is touching the mast on the bottom ship.

Stadimeter range finding is pretty cool, eh? Except in rough seas!

I've never had much accurate luck with game stadimeters myself. You're not alone Grasshoppa.

Actually double image stadimeter is pretty cool to use in rough seas too, as opposed to the "estimate height on the rangefinder" method from sh3.

In SHIII there was a cheat possible. One could pause the game and the use the stable picture to establish mastheight.

I hope SH4 does not allow me to pause the game and use the stadimeter, because I could too often not resist cheating in SHIII
