Which of the S-class boats will be modeled?

I was looking up submarine information on Wikipedia, and according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_...lass_submarine, there were four different Groups of the type. Does anyone know which one the game will model?

Hard to say, unless they manage to have the different performances for different types. One I'm certain won't be in there is the tiny handful with the stern tube; which surpisingly was the one that was in SH1. Fortunately Hawk's Silent Hunter Utilities fixed that.

I think it will be Group III, because I've read that the S-class subs in SH4 don't have a stern tube.

Looking at the characteristics of Group I and which ones were lost during the war, I think this Group makes the most sense to model (although one could also make a case for Group III).

Could be, but that would be the oldest of the whole class which is probably not so good while being depthcharged.

True, but, looking at the list, the Group Is hold the top spot for number lost during the war. Not a good thing, of course, but that leads me to believe they were the most numerous ones of the class in the Pacific at the outbreak of the war.

Here's the list:

Group I: Lost 12 boats in totall,1 was scrapped between the war, 5 boats were lost during WWII, 6 were given to the Royal Navy

Group II: Lost 6 boats in total, 2 were lost at sea between the wars,4 were scrapped between the wars ,0 were lost during WW II

Group III: Lost 1 boat in total, 1 was lost during WW II

Group IV: Lost 3 boats in total,1 was scrapped between the wars ,2 were lost during WW II

We can see that Group one lost most boats during the war which suggests that they were rather unsafe and not fit for the war. Group III lost only one boat at all which makes me believe that this class should be modeled.

Default S Class Variants

Maybe two or more groups will be included as upgrades, as the IIA and IID were included in SHIII.:hmm: I believe that Dev team has suggested that there would be such upgrade variants (and not just base classes), although the S-Class was not planned to be included at that time. This may only mean minor upgrades though, and not sub-class variants.

There were five S classes.

S 1 length 219 feet 25 in class

S 2 length 207 feet 1 in class (Lake)

S 3 lenght 231 feet 15 in class (Government)

S 42 length 225 feet 6 in class

S 48 length 240 feet 4 in class (only S boats constructed with a rear tube)

of those five classes, only two classes made Pacific war patrols.

S 1 class

S 42 class

The only S class to be sunk by enemy fire was a gun battle between the S-44 (S-42 class)and and an IJN destroyer. The S-44 mistook the destroyer for a small merchant and opened fire at close range.

Five other S boats were lost in the war. All were the S 1 class. Of these five, 3 ran aground (no depth meter?), one collided with her own escort and sank and the last in training accident off Hawaii.

The last S 42 class boat to be commisioned was the S 47 in 1925.

THe last S 1 class boat to be commisioned was the S 41 in 1924.

No S boats were lost due to IJN ASW.

Default Had to search all over for this old link: S-boat detail

Had to really hunt to find this again. It has the detail and many images of our in-game S-boat, along with the other classes we get.

Yes they are both there. I can't tell if we get 2 versions of each class or not, original tower with 3" and new cut-away conning towers and deck guns of '43 refits.

Thanks for the link. From the data and info shown there, we'll be getting the Group I class. From what I've read, these boats did not have a TDC. Is that correct?

I think not, no TDC for these old timers.

They did it the old fashioned way, I believe:

Get out your sliderule. You are are going to need all your plotting tools. Let's see, I need a plot, the Is-Was, sliderule, divider, protractor, and a lot of practice.
