Ship Flares - Any mod doing this?

Hi all,

I'm currently reading "Destroyer. An Anthology of First Hand Accounts of the War at Sea 1939 - 1945" edited by Ian Hawkins.

Believe me, this is a very interesting book, and contains many stories of close encounters with U-Boats etc.

Amongst the many, many interesting stories an idea for a mod emerged when I read about convoys being attacked by U-Boats.

It was common practice for the ship under attack to launch a red signal flare to alert the destroyer escorts and to warn other vessels a u-boat is operating against them.

Wouldn't it be cool to see that in SH3?

Picture it - slowly stalking a convoy through the night, finally getting into firing position and launching torps at the first ship. As they strike the ship - or you get a near miss - she launches a bright red flare to alert everyone of your presence and to give the destroyers a location to home in on.

So, question is - does a mod already exisit for this?

Thanks all!

Not sure about stock SHIII, but in GWX you see white flares launched at night. Also, in SHII the merchants launched white flares if they were under attack at night.

SHII had distress rockets, and it was pretty funny; if you torpedoed one, they would all launch them..."NO, help ME first!"

They're also described in Battle Of The Atlantic.

Cool that GWX has them.

It's not unusual in GWX for night to be turned into day when a few escorts team up to hunt you

Yes after reading 'Iron coffins' it would seem that most, if not all, convoys fired flares if attacked during the night.
I din't know GWX had this feature...
You people are just giving me no choice about downloading it are you!

i know the dd's shoot flares a bunch, but i dont recall seeing merchants firing them. im sure it would be possible to change the color of the flare farely easily and then give the merchants a star shell loadout.

I think Privateer may be working on flares as a side to working on his
para dropped star shells for the K ship.

Yes, I have most of what I need to do different color flares.

I have to ask Ref or Diving Duck for a lesson on how to read the Hex for color
of the light.
