Especially where subs are concerned, Das Boot is the best book/depiction ever.
Not only a crazy story, but true and perfect for youngsters.. So they may realize that what was not so long ago. May his seas be calm.

The British release says "The Miniseries", but I think it's the same. I don't think you can buy the series with all the opening and closing credits, but the uncut movie version is just that: the series but as one whole instead of six episodes.

He didnt leave without some controversy concerning his exploits on a U boat however....it seems some in the U boat community think he has embellished a bit on his personal experiences....whatever the case....I for one have enjoyed his books and the subsequent movie many times over ........RIP......

This man authored a great book and an interesting book. He took from his own experiences and that of others and came up with the book "Das Boot".
Those that say he embellished the U-Boot experiences especially his own, I say so what. I read to learn and be entertained and his book did that. If we all could write and allow others to visulize the written contents it would be great. But alas, only some are so gifted. The author of Das Boot was one of those. Thank you. rest in peace, brother in arms... ![]() |

Aside from being an author of various books about the U-boat war („Das Boot“, „Die Festung“ etc.), Mr. Buchheim was a highly respected collector of modern art. Having been a painter by himself, he started to collect art close after the war and by the time managed to get a collection of very famous modern artists. His collection was taxed at around $ 300 mn and he finally established his own “Museum of Fantasy” to show his collection along with his own paintings he made during WW II as a u-boat reporter. You can visit his museum in Bernried (southern Bavaria): http://www.buchheimmuseum.de/
In fact Mr. Buchheim’s death found much echo in German papers, mainly due to his excellent work as a collectior of modern art. RIP Mr. Buchheim.

Just picking up this thread, since I picked up Buchheim's book "U-Boat War" today at the library. I highly recommend it.
It's basically a photo diary, plus text, of a patrol on a VII-C boat. I've only scanned thrugh it so far. The photos are incredible. And if anyone was doubting the accuracy of the Das Boot movie meeting in heavy weather of the two U-boats (Thomsen's), there's an amazing series of photos of Buchheim's boat meeting another U-boat ... looks identical. Details are: Lothar-Gunther Buchheim, "U-Boat War", Trans. Gudie Lawaetz, Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1978. ISBN 0-394-41437-3. |
