Default Grey wolves mod won't install

Just downloaded all files of GWX and tried to install it over a clean SH3 file with 1.4b upgrade and get a message that says: "C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII" is not a valid SH3 v1.4b installation... but as far as I know it is and otherwise runs just fine. In fact I ran SH3 from the original CD in the drive after I got the message.

After all this download time what's going on?

Hi mate!
Check if you have removed ALL the files from previous installations. Also check if you have the right patch, since there are different ones (some for the download version of SH3, some for the DVD version, some for Europe.. and so on).

Have deleted all SH3 files. Even deleted all SH3 Commander files...did not rely on rollback. Yes, have worked with SH3 since it came out and do have the correct V1.4b. (I have several messages on Subsim fora and WaW...in fact I uploaded my query there too, in desperation.)

The error is at: "Test 5 = FAILED - 8a1f414cfe229b291c26311bc9a1ea05" The first four Tests by GWX were ok. I checked to be sure the Starforce files were in place in the Non Plug and Play file in Device Manager...they are...since I knew the CD would check for them.

I do have a separate NYGM V2.4 SH3 loaded but it's named completely differently. And I did a new virginal install for GWX from my original CD. JGSME is not active, tho 'was used in the NYGM for modding that. Who knows what Test 5 is?

Am eager to work with this, but am stumped.

This is the MD5 check on the GWX Part 5 bin file. Just to be safe (cos there were incorrect MD5 hash's) click on my sig to get another MD5 file. Run the checker again. If the same error comes up then re-download part5.bin.

EDIT - this is the MD5 Hash for part 5 - 7f2cf8be22e0625786244ab1383abe90 Please note I have assumed that test 5 relates to part5.bin. Anywho, all the MD5 hash's are there when you click on my sig.

"Test 5 = FAILED - 8a1f414cfe229b291c26311bc9a1ea05" tells me with 5000% certainty that you have NYGM 2.4 files in the *selected* install folder. Don't ask us why, as only you will know.

Firstly, make sure that in the installer you select your "virginal GWX" installation folder. If the same error persists, then you have somehow cross-pollenated your "virginal" installation with NYGM files.

Now when you say you deleted your SH3Cmdr install, did that include the !BACKUP folder contents? If not, then my bet is that you rolled back NYGM files into your GWX installation.

Bottom line, the install you selected contains NYGM 2.4 files.

Pls don't equate the contents of the error log with the integrity of the d/l files. The contents of the error log relate specifically to the selected DESTINATION folder and whether it passed the five installer tests. They are not source file corruption checks. MD5Compare takes care of that aspect.

It is simply mere coincidence that there are five bin files and five installer tests.

JScones: Yes I very precisely went into the AH3 Cmdr file and deleted the !Backup folder and the other two (I think, two) files that are otherwise left behind. I deleted because I did not want to roll the NYGM files anywhere.

I take it from your msg to Danlisa that the GWX install is testing the destination folder and the downloaded GWX files are not corrupt. Now my non-virginal (promiscuous?) folder is named "SilentHunterIII_NYGMv2.4" and I would think that would make it clear to GWX that the destination folder would simply be the existing "SilentHunterIII". Maybe not. I assume the best solution would be to delete the existing "soiled" virgin and reinstall a v1.4b "vestal".

By the way, how do you insert a quote into a message like this? I don't see a quote button in the neighborhood.

I appreciate the help all.

Dunno if you intended to re-install SH3Cmdr, but if so, you've just lost your Commander histories (as the readme says - don't delete SH3Cmdr.ini if you want to keep using SH3Cmdr).

Yes and No.

Yes in that the installer performs five tests on the destination folder and halts if any of those tests fail.

No in that only an MD5 compare can accurately determine whether your d/l files are corrupt.

To ensure that you don't have corrupt d/l files you need to do an MD5 comparison straight after d/l; I highly recommend everyone doing this comparison *before* running the installer. Otherwise, if you don't and one of your files is corrupt, you won't find out until the installer finds the corrupt file and then promptly stops installing. A waste of your time in other words.

Why would it? :hmm: The installer is just 0s and 1s. By default it points to the installation folder that is stored in the registry - usually just the stock \SilentHunterIII. From there it goes whereever you tell it to - so if your GWX install is at \SilentHunterIII-GWX, then you must point the installer there yourself.

I would. I assume you no longer have an SH3Cmdr install? If not, then that aspect is out of the way.

I'd uninstall the virginal installation and delete everything that's left behind - totally wipe the folder from within Windows Explorer.

Then I'd reinstall and patch. You may want to reinstall simply to SilentHunterIII, although I would recommend installing to somewhere like "SilentHunterIII - GWX".

Then I'd copy the new installation and paste it elsewhere, calling it "SilentHunterIII - Clean v1.4b" or something. Now you have a nice backup if anything goes wrong at a later date.

Then I'd run the installer pointing to the new installation.

All going well it will work as you would have done nothing to change the files in between. All not going well, then you must be doing something wrong in re-installing either SH3 or GWX, as the GWX installer simply records what it finds, and it just seems more than a coincidence that it is finds NYGM 2.4 files...

I appreciate all the time you took to reply specifically to my message. I'm not sure I completely understand all the technical stuff, but:

1. I accepted the loss of the Cmdr files as less important than getting a good GWX install.
2. Not sure what an MD5 comparison is or how to run it.
3. I was not aware that I could 'point' the installer to a specific file.
4. That is exactly what I did, and it worked. Wiped the old install, made a new one, ran GWX.exe and it loaded without a murmur. Do all those 1-5 *.dll files just sit there or are they loaded by the GWX.exe file?
5. I usually do keep a 'vanilla' version of SH3 around to drag things out of when I want.

Now I need a list of mods that are acceptable to GWX after finally learning what worked for NYGM. Has anyone created a site with 'approved' GWX mods that have actually been loaded and found to be compatible?

In any case, am now aboard Grey Wolves.

Great to hear. You can now safely back those 5 bins and 1 exe away on CDs or DVD. They are no longer needed.

The only "approved" mods are those that come with GWX or are on the GWX website (click GWX image in my sig).

However, there are numerous mods with various levels of compatibility with GWX (some knowingly change GWX gameplay but that is stated in the mod's readme). I'm sure others can chip in here with suggestions.

EDIT: If you still intend using SH3Cmdr, pls read on...

1. If you continue to have an NYGM install AND a GWX install, it is advisable to install SH3Cmdr twice and have one dedicated to NYGM and one dedicated to GWX. Thus you avoid any compatibility and cross-pollenation problems.

2. You must download http://www.users.on.net/~jscones/GWX/GWXCfg4SH3Cmdr.zip and extract the contents into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder (refer to readme.txt in zip).

3. You must be using R2.6 or newer (R2.7 recommended).

Thanks for all...good advice from a pro.
I did use the approved GWXcfg4SH3Cmdr to load Cmdr - seems to work fine with V2.7. Will take your advice and have two Cmdr installs and will review the mods on the GWX site. Am always cautious about mods...we've all had bad experiences.
