Just started playing Grey Wolves and got a radio message, went something like this.
"SSS. SSS. SSS, SS Bosnia 45.62 N 09.23W." Assuming this is a grid ref, how do I find it? |

Those radio messages are historicallly correct, but they don't refer to things in the SH3 game (with the exception of some of the larger military battles and operations) that you're playing. They're added for atmosphere and immersion, but don't go chasing any of those convoys or ships, as they're not there.
That being said, if you're curious as to where those lat & long's are referring to, you can check that here: http://www.ubootwaffe.net/quadrant.cgi

Also the prefix SSS is the version of SOS you use whilist sinking from submarine action so there won't be much to see by the time you get there

I know what you're trying to say, but it's just a little misleading because they can also be seen by pressing "M". That's why I wanted to clarify. You make it look like any message received by pressing "M" is false, but that statement is incorrect. |

i would tend to agree, if Bdu sent a message saying that there is a convoy at a certain grid it would be a bit daft if it wasnt really there, also you wouldnt be able yto tell the difference between real contacts and just the ones that are there for effect

If, historically, Gunther Prien in U-47 radioed on June 14th, 1940 that there was a convoy in grid BF1158, that will show up in your Radio Messages, as GWX includes historical radio traffic. But I can almost guarantee you that if you sail over there in SH3, you will see nothing but empty ocean. If BdU in SH3 sends you a Radio Contact Report of a convoy reported in Grid AM57, doing 8 kts and travelling NNW, you can indeed intercept this in game.

While we're at it: Why are the grids in the historical messages reported as XXxxxx, the capital Xs being letters, and the smaller x numbers. I know where BF, or CA or such grid is, but what do the four numbers instead of two mean? How could I work with them if I wanted to?

Ok just to clarify
Messages you recieve from Bdu that slow you to TC1 concerning sinkings and convoys are historical You will notice they come from and are addressed to Uboat numbers - as they are real messages from WW2 Messages that concern operations starting are indeed happening then as are reports of new bases and port losses CONTACT REPORTS you get are just that and will indeed be there The reason the messages have XXxxxx format is that is how they were sent The Kreigsmarine divided each individual square into a further 9 so they had a much better idea of exactly were the uboat was IE BE67 is a huge square ( as they all are ) - divide that up by a further 9 squares inside and it makes each grid a lot smaller to get better positioning |
