With SH3 Commander, if you are on the surface and killed you CAN change it from "Killed" to "Surrendered".

And it's a good thing, because only sinking ships would get rapidly boring. After you have sunk a good number of ships, the cat and mouse game with the escorts is often more fun. (Until you get overconfident at one point....)
