I just got DW after having been recently playing sub command, and I'm getting into the first mission. I had read a review that said it is much faster to complete in the orion than in a sub, and since I've commanded subs before, I figured I'd try out the plane.
I notice in the briefing that in the execution section, I am to stay in international airspace, at least 12 miles from land at all times. However, when you start out, you're only a few miles from the shore, so you start out already breaking that rule, and it seems practically impossible to get good photos of all the ships and other such things from that far out, not to mention effective sub detection with sonobouys. Additionally, it indicates I should take pictures from a "safe" altitude. I haven't seen anything in the manual to indicate what altitude that would be. The game starts you out at around 2000 feet which is pretty low. Any suggestions here would be good too. I'm a bit confused on the issue with the briefing instructions. I realize there's no mission goal that gets failed if you enter Russian airspace, but why would it tell you to stay in international airspace, and then start you in Russian airspace while giving you a mission you can't complete if you stay in international airspace? |

Don't know why, but I suggest the main reason is to advice the player to stay away from the range of most of the SAMs in the area. Don't remember if the platforms turn hostile in the mission, but don't worry about the coastline, try to stay away from the platforms. You only need to get close enough to get an ESM or visual track of certain platforms to complete the mission, if I remember correctly.

What about altitude? Obviously using Radar will get you counterdetected, but is there an altitude level/range combo where ground based units won't be able to ID you?

here here, now. come sit on me knee and learn. (don't really sit, though
![]() 1. The mission brief is a SLIGHT mistake. It really should say "Stay 12 miles away from the harbor" instead of the coastline. 2. For your altitude, set for the "medium" preset. It gives you the best visibility range for safe altitude. 3. You do not have to worry about RADAR counter detection, or any for that matter. 4. Although you do not have to detect the subs, if you do, learn to "loft" sonobouys. I will probably make a new topic on that later. (to the hardcore P-3 player: Yes you can "loft" the bouys) Well, there you go. P.S: If you really want to know why there is no coastal twelve mile thing, I'll explain to you now. go into mission editor, (which was used to create the first mission) and be sure that the first thing you notice is how the trigger areas are circles. Now try to make those circles so the edges of them are twelve miles from the coast. After the second or third, you will understand what I am trying to say. ![]()
