Default If a Sub hits bottom.. End of the Road???

If a submarine gets damaged so badly, that it sinks to the bottom (We're talking about SH3 here ppl) , will I be able to surface it after the crew fixes all leaks and pumps ?

This is what happened in Das Boot, the sub sank to the bottom, the crew fixed up the leaks and the ballast tanks were blown free it from the mud. Can it be emulated in Sh3 ,
or once u hit the bottom, there's no coming back?

Yep, no problems since there's no mud in SH3, although you can still damage yourself trying to get off the floor. From memory it was quite difficult at times with AOD though, and sometimes impossible. And the u-boat damage model seemed better too.

Then again, maybe I'm just dreaming.

So uh.. (sorry didn't comprehend ur reply), by "Yep" , you mean that it is possible to get ur boat off the floor?

Um..I do know what "yep" means, I just wasn't sure if ur reply meant "yes, ur sub can come up" or "yes, your sub can't come up":p

You're definitly not dreaming... I remember when I once tried over half an hour in real time to get that bloody boat out of the mud in AOD

But hitting the bottom is not the end... last time I played SH3 I got assigned to grid AF16 just outside Scapa Flow in mid 1940, just as I passed the eastern grid border, I ordered to dive to periscope depth and soon after hit a mine... the fuel tanks were destroyed, periscopes, hydrophones, radio, forward batteries and much more, I had heavy flooding and sank quickly to the bottom.... I managed to repair all damage that could still be repaired, but since the stern batteries were also damaged, they were completly discharged, without any diesel left, all I could do was surface and press Esc to return to base (How realistic, without any source of power... maybe they turned the driveshafts with their bare hands?). Last time I hit a mine it was at least over immediatly.

Hmm..yes..that Escape function...it is highly unrealistic...I managed to reach home too with my fuel tanks empty. Luckily AOD was less forgiving in the name of realism.
Go AOD !

Repair all compartments then order 'blow ballast'.

Put a tape on the esc key... Nothing says you have to use it. Other than for saves or leaving the game. It's up to you to decide how realistic you play. On one hand you complain about the function, on the other you use it.

Very well put mate...some people play for fun whilst others prefer 'realism'...It's all down to personal choice...neither is better than the other...you pays your money and takes your choice

I just sit on the bottom until the rescure sub comes along, hooks to my casing and we offload 5 crewmen at a time. Me being the captain, leave last. Them my alarm clock goes off and I wake to go to work. Just another dream or nightmare depending on how you look at it. I think I mess with this game too much

You are however royally screwed if your electric engines of batteries are destroyed, unless you are in shallow enough water to use the blow ballast to surface, Once there though you are a boat and no longer a submersible.

I often use the seafloor as a hiding place (usually when those DD's just have passive sonar...) But i always take damage from it.. i can lay still on the seafloor for about 4 minutes, then suddenly "We are taking damage, sir" appears.. Is there a fix for this?
(Using GW 1.1a)

A nightmare if the sea bottom is at 500 meters , some skippers wake up screaming blow ballast !!!!! :rotfl:

A couple of things I've noted about going to the ocean floor:

1. Time compression is the same as if you're near land. This can be tweaked in SH3 Commander.

2. If you're using a mod that gives you realistic wave effects, your boat may "bounce" off the bottom. This, of course, leads to damage and a very busy Chief Engineer.

@Seth - Could this be what is happening with you? Does it always occur in shallow water?
