Default W@W Contact Update Mod

I was playing SH3 on a W@W patrol when I was contemplating the absence of wolfpacks from SH3 when I was stricken by a basic idea.

The idea involves a server and a small program either running in the background or more likley being integrated into the SH3 radio / player map portions of the game.

Ideally the concept is this, start application, run SH3, if you have an internet connection every time you submit a status report the application will check the player sub position on the player's nav map and send this position to a server. The server will in turn take said information into a database and will display a dot on a map of the atlantic displaying the location of said sub.

This can be further spiffied by allowing users database access with login's so that these simple dots being posted to this webmap would then contain basic information like Sub #, Kaleun, etc.

So one of the final thoughts on this was that this concept of an updatable contact map from player clients via a web app was probably addressed before either by another individual or a modding team. So now I'm simply wondering wether or not anyone has looked into this rather small but gameplay enriching possibility and wether or not it's fesiable?

Actually wolfpacks are included in NYGM 2.2 which is one of the mods useable in Wolves at War. I was involved in a Wolfpack attack during my 2nd patrol there I think. Sergbuto I believe was the author of that mod and you can get it seperately for other mods. Pretty sure GWX will include wolfpacks, but not for certain till it comes out.

Trying to coordinate the dots of active captains across the Wolves at War group, or any online community like that, would be extremely difficult since not only do players not all play at the same real world time, but they also don't play at the same in game time. On Tuesday night you might be on a patrol from March 1st, 1942 while I might have installed some new technology and wouldn't have sailed till March 11th, but we'd be playing at the same time in the real world.

Ideally the time differences would be meaningless however I believe that they could rather easially be included within the point mapping system.

Ideally such a system would work with the update trigger for the background or mod application being whenever a player decides to submit a status report. In theroy all the variables contained by the status report, Game Time, Boat #, Grid Sector, etc... could be pretty much copy/pasted into an online database with a preamble command to delete any previous information from that specific player from the chart.

The only tricky part would be getting the player's NAV MAP position and posting that to the webmap.

The only problem that I see here is the way in which status reports are handled.

You submit status report, and I believe that depending on the variable of the simple presence of GRT within the status report is the trigger for revieving either the "well done" message or the 'Fight harder" message.

So I simply need to know if an application can rip data from the SH3 status report messages.

And I need to know the principles behind the NAV MAP sub position system, if it functions off of lat/long or some deviant sub-sub sector system.

If that is possible then the process of making an application submit said data to a small online database would be easy.

I am currently doing some tinkering around within Sh3 for the answers, and so far it's looking ever more possible.

Tronics my man you might be able to come up with a few ideas to make a project with GWX MP which us MP players are trying to get going be even better than we thought possible. I like the idea you came up with above. If you have the time could you check out thread. The is a link below to it.
