Default Eye view screen went black

I had just got between the to wrecks entering Scapa Flow from the east Sept 13, 1939, 2208. I put up my observation scope to check the positions of the ships and nothing but black. I raised the attack scope and the same thing. So I pressed F12 and I got the same thing, a black screen. I couldn't see anything cause it was so black. Any ideas?

EDIT: Well, I restarted the computer and the game and I heard thunder and saw a bird fly across the screen, so I guess I am in a storm, with complete overcast blocking out the night sky. Now how in the world am I going to attack any ship inside the harbour when I can't see a damned thing?

Perhaps I should stop engines and settle on the floor of the harbour and wait until morning???

How come TGW took the authority to report weather conditions away from the Navigator and gave it to the Watch Officer???

I had the same problem once in Miami. The fog was so thick I couldn't see further than 100-150 m. I had to abandon the mission and look for other targets

I've sent a report to BdU 'Mission abandoned due to bad weather'

Their reply was 'Be More Aggressive'

Don't worry there are plenty ships in the sea. These things do happen sometimes

Good Luck and Good Shooting

Thanks, but it doesn't really help me in my situation. I took a long time getting into the harbour and now that I'm here, I think I should carry out my mission.

I don't think a Kaleun, once sneaking into Scapa Flow at night would simply give up and leave just because the weather turned into a bloody storm where he couldn't see his hand in front of his face.

Maneuver yourself via hydrophone and wait for daylight.

You will probably have minimal visability but if you line youself up correctly you'll be fine. Find your target, you should be able to see it in obs scope at a distance of under 200mt then just backaway.

There is a good 'glitch' that will help you here. Even though you can't see the target you can still lock on to it with the scopes.

IIRC you may have to input your TDC data maually if you use this glitch.(but if it's a stationary target, no probs)

I have never placed a U-boat on the seabed and turn off engines and wait for a while. How is it done without damage to your U-boat?

Dare I do a depth check done by whomeever does it?

Again, a bit of a cheat but with any supermod if you cut your engines and set a new depth, the boat will very slowly sink until it reaches the bottom. You can use 1kt speed to hurry this along and still take no damage.

IIRC Scapa is between 15-20mt at most.

I would suggest that you actually find a quiet area, stay a periscope depth & crank TC. The reason for this is if you are sat on the bottom you will be limited to a max TC of 8. (unless you changed it)

Edit - About GW changing the weather report. This was because the Nav Officer was never on deck to see what the weather was like.

Think about it Rob
How can the navigator tell you the weather when you are submerged ?
Only someone topside can tell you the weather properly

I just on the west edge of the sunken ships on the east channel. I guess i't as good a place as any to wait at PD and TC the ime.

Hard to see at night, yes? You got a pretty good taste of what the u-boat watch had to deal with. Kind of cool experience via a game. Wait until day break. You will get'em then!

well maybe just try to shoot at the hydrophone bearings. When you're close enough to the target, you'll see "target unknown" markings on the hydro, even for non-moving targets. I know, it's not realistic at all, but... In this way you could try firing a fish with a contact fuse and wait for your luck

Really. I dodn't know I could do that in TGW. What are the chances of hitting the a non-moving target when I don't know how far it is. How far would the hydrophones pick up the non-moving target?

At the present there is NO, I repeat, NO movement of any warships in the harbour. The only warship moving is the one way outside the east entrnce.

It is now 0139 Thursday September 14, 1939.

I realy do not want to waste eels on a small ship. The reason for going into Scapa Flow was to get a capitAL ship, like a battleship.

What do you mean by a contact fuse?

you don't need the whole fire solution, just turn the scope at the bearing you've read from the hydrophone, by default TDC settings you should aim in the same direction where your're looking. By a "contact fuse" I mean a fish detonator type- magnetic or contact. Because you don't know the draft of the vessel you're shooting at, just set a contact fuse and the torpedo depth at 2-3 m and fire. If it doesn't bounce off the hull you may score a hit. I've tried it yesterday in the Hartlepool harbour and it worked for me. I also play TGW 2.2 (at 100%).
