Surface or not?

I don't know if this has been asked before. My question is, what is best for a patrol? Being at surface with an officer watch, or submerged listening with the hydrophones?
Right now, I use to submerge at ahead slow most of the time, venting and recharging at night to avoid the curious eyes from sea and air; but, would it be better to be on surface and use Mark I eyeballs?

Im new to SH3 but i prefer the following tactics:-

Daytime Patrolling

1.Remain on the surface with an Officer of the Watch on the bridge & a few Able Seaman to keep him company.
2.Get the gramaphone on to keep morale up.
3.Keep speed at ahead slow.
4.Charge the battery if below full
5.Practise a few crash dives and emergency surfaces to keep the crew on thier toes.
6.Stand Down the gunners if you're far off land.

Nightime Patrolling

1.OOW on the bridge with AB's to keep him company.
2.Gramaphone off so crew can get some kip.
3.Nice slow speed keeping very vigilant.
4.Have the deck gun manned just in case, remembering to swap the gun crew over regularly to avoid fatigue.

Thats how im doing it anyway

In the early war, I tend to go two hours surfaced, two hours submerged, as there's a better hydrophone range that eyeball. If I'm on the surface, I'll keep a WO up there.

In later war, radar and nastily competent RN types make it a pain to be around, so I tend to stay submerged as long as possible, and only surface when I need to and only at night.
