Default Ship Speed+Damage

Hi All.I was playing Silent Hunter GW the other night, and was lucky enough to come across a battle group.i came to periscope depth and got 4 torps off lucky me my target was a what i think a heavy crusier, 2 torps it the stern,i rushed to see the damage id done.when i looked i could see id blown off 2 out of 4 of the Ships propelers i could see the damage but the ship kept a steady 16knots even with this damage....could they still keep that speed after losing 2 propelars???

Crossing the Atlantic in a Ticonderoga Crusier, we used to "trail shaft" to conserve fuel. 1 of 4 engines turning 1 shaft with the other free dragging. We were able to run at 13kts in this mode. Based on this I would say your damaged cruiser would be able to keep 16kts.

Well a Tico is a far far cry from a Southhampton of a Fiji. Maybe...it could but to know for 100% you'd have to, well... "know for sure".

Southhampton: 4 screws

Tico: 2 screws

If the Tico could travel on 1, why should there be a question about the Southhampton traveling on 2?

Torpedo hits to the rear section of a south hampton class cruiser will likely cause major damage to rear section of any cruiser sized ships. 2 torpedo hits to the fantail section of ship will likely sever the whole rear end off. I doubt the ship will be moving at 16 knots in that case. The same situation happened to the IJN CA Takao when it was hit by two submarine torpodos.

Explosive damage to the rear end of the ship could also cuase the spining shafts to rip out of their mountings (as happned with the POW) and cause extensive damage and flooding to rear end compartments between the reduction gears and the propellers.

If you look at most of the records of submarine warship kills, most cruiser sized ships "rendered combat unworthy"with 1 to 2 torpedo hits.

While NYGM damage mod model sinking by floodding. In alot of case, major warship tended to sink due to capsizing. HMS, HMS Glorious , HMS Barham all sank due to rapid flooding leading to loss of stability. Infact , very few ships actually sank sole due to the total loss of boyancy, An example of this is the USS Yorktown.

Moe capsizing ships needed. I'd love to watch a big battlewagon heel over.

Good point.
