I just did a mission to get the enigma machine around the West Coast of Scotland. It's the start of the war in the starter boat, my commander has just done the first mission after his training.
This is the 2nd mission I have done so far. So I am very new to the game. I managed to do it but I didn't have enough fuel to go back to Wilhelm's Haven. Now I get a message saying Mission Completed!! There is not enough fuel to return to base. Under that it says return to base.... But I can't get back and I can't seem to end the mission either? What can I do? I don't want to start a new game as my guys have got some medals and XP and cash and stuff... |

Hi Two-Six!
Have you tried to set your engine setting to the lowest KF, and then hit the Back to base button? Boat use less fuel in this setting. If you are so low this doesn't work, you can try Diesel-electric propulsion. Only use the diesels to charge the batteries and then switch to electromotoren when they are full. Drive on the batteries to they are nearly empty and switch to diesel to charge, and so on. Good luck! ![]() |

HAHA 17 years....wow. Thanks for the welcome back!
![]() Actually Subsim sends me a happy birthday, so long lost but never forgotten. I shed a tear for every lost year without Subsim in it... Actually I was hiding out on a Polynesian archipelago surrounded by topless maidens eating pineapples.... Last edited by Two-Six; 01-26-25 at 06:00 AM. |

So coming back to my little problem. I don't think I can get anywhere near a friendly fuel base. I am going to run out in the north sea slightly south east of Orkney no mater what I do.
What happens to my career? Do I just get stuck in limbo now? Is my only option to re load the save before I took that mission and take another easy one I can do in my noob sub? Is it that I picked the wrong mission for the wrong sub and should I have waited until I got a better boat with the range needed? Also, I am starting to remember what I loved about Silent Hunter3, I played the heck out of that one, I loved it and Uboat is a nice modern update of that game. Good stuff!! |

I DID IT!!!!
I did as advised and did a mixture of cruising on the surface until my batteries were full then diving and running on the batteries until they were flat and also getting my engine guys to keep on the case and somehow I managed to get back to Heligoland for fuel then make it home. I had literally about .5% fuel left..... That was quite tense!!! The lads got a skiing holiday and medals!! |

HI Two-Six,
in the tooltip of the fuel gauge, you are always shown the distance for which the fuel is sufficient. By manning additional sailors on the diesel and nav map, you can significantly reduce diesel consumption. This can also be seen in the fuel gauge tooltip. Happy hunting! Cheers Ruby ![]() |

Congrats on your survival Herr Kaleun, but in the future there is no need to dive here. That would have cost you range. You can run on the electric motors on the surface, alternating propulsion methods, to increase your range. Matter of fact, it is something you might look to do outbound on long patrols, so you have more fuel oil later.

When this happens I run on the surface on electric motors until I have nearly depleted the batteries, then switch over to diesels just long enough to recharge and swap back to electric
Just repeat this process until you get close to base and can fast travel, otherwise, do it all the way there. glad you got it sorted

/\ that tactic is critical in SH-V's "Churchill Express" scenario to intercept a fast moving convoy of 5 troopships headed for Capetown SA. I generally await their arrival at the African port of Freetown and sink them as they enter and anchor; however I've also had to travel all the way to Capetown to intercept, and then struggle meticulously on batts, submerging and recharging slowly northward to the Vichy French Port at Dakar to refuel and replenish eels enroute back to the French coast homebase. Too bad there isn't a longer range type IX boat in SH-V; which would've been be more suited to the task.
