Weather glitch?

I've recently done a brand new install of the Onealex version of GWX 3 and started a new career at the beginning of August 1939. I've used SH3 Commander to set the parameters for the career. I'm completing my first patrol in a Type IIA in the North Sea, returning through the Kiel Canal. I had mostly stormy conditions during the patrol (which is bad enough), and now that I'm in the Kiel Canal, although conditions are calm and sunny, there is snow on the ground! The date is 12 August, a full 40 days before the autumn equinox, so it should still be high summer. How well does the weather actually reflect the season in SH3/GWX?
