nice pumpjet too.

Problem is that with the Russian Navy in the financial bind it is... how long does it take to finish a sub... like 10-15 years of construction? and that's if its not cancelled and scrapped before hand, let alone if their will be any further units of the class.

I hope they never complete it, why do they need one? They have the US as an ally now, not an enemy

Don't worry, their newest class is almost 15 years behind schedule.......

They should build it and turn it into a hotel, that should pay off the cost of the construction bill.

How about the US dismantles the 60 688i and 20 or so ohio submarines ?
Why would the US need them anymore ?
How about the 10 nuclear aircarft carriers ?
Don't we live in one big happy world ? :rotfl:

sorry... the US aircraft carriers will have to stay... operational necessity...
and i doubt if there are 60 ssns in the inventory, or 20 ssbns prowling around either...

the new Russian sub is probably being built for a lot of the same reasons we're still building subs... besides, if they decide they don't need it anymore, India will always be there to make an offer...

so, if there is any validity to Kapitan's numbers (they look accurate as far as i can see), it's obvious that the numbers Goldorak was alluding to were a lil exxagerrated...

plus, you must take into account the fact that at no time are any of the total numbers ever in service together... maintainence, repairs, etc usually means that at least 50% of any of the force is tied up at the pier...

getting back to the new Russian sub... at first glance, it reminds me of the Seawolf class... the last unit especially...

of course there are the usual appearance differences between US and Soviet boats, but overall, it seems to be a Soviet response to the JimmCarter... lengthened hull, pumpjet/propulsor, to me indicate an attempt at a lot of similar mission capabilities...

I took those numbers from the book "cold war submarines", and they were correct up until the end of the cold war.
I had no idea that the us had already decomissioned 20 688i and almost 50% of its ssbn.

Are you going bind? if you come here via the front gate there was daily news about it on the home page U.S turned 4 of thier ohios into SSGN so it leaves 14 left.

Russia has 16 SSBN's although 15 are fully active and only about 6 will be on duty some where at some stage of deployment (meaning theres only about 2 or 3 at sea).

If you want real numbers try the soviet navy.

91 SSBN's 422 attack submarines making a force of 513 submarines of which some 250 are nuclear powerd. (note this is at the hieght of the cold war)

Look at the third pic, immediately behind the sail. Do I see missile hatches there or not?
