Both submarines are powerful platforms however both have very different missions.
Virginia is a General purpose submarine in that i mean she is design to act as an all round vessel by using her weapons to attack sea and land targets specifically. With that in mind there is no clear defined threat that she is intended to take on she has to be good at everything (and she is to a point) The Yasen modified will take the place of the retiring Oscar II, its a cheaper platform to build maintain and operate, its entire role is primarily Anti shipping and Anti Submarine, yes she can also use Kalibr missiles to attack land targets but that's more a secondary function. The reason i state the above is because of the doctrines which if you look at the USN its more orientated to strike warfare, where as the Russians are more orientated to sea denial, thus there is a big impetus to use these against CVBG rather than land targets. The one biggest counter for both these submarines is the pure hunter killer and as the Astute v New Mexico proved top dog in this world of hunting other submarines is the British Astute class.
