Can you switch to electric engines while on the surface?
Here's what happened: First patrol off Formosa, I trailed a little convoy in daylight for a bit but, because I'm in an S-class boat, I couldn't get ahead of them to set up an approach. I thought I was far enough away but I guess the destroyer escort spotted me and shot me up pretty bad (I was in time compression like an idiot). I took damage to all the engines, dove, survived, the destroyer went away, etc. Now I'm surfaced. I have one diesel engine fixed, but for some reason it won't do anything. I turned off battery recharge, that didn't help. I'm surfaced, in daylight, about 30-35 miles off Formosa, and I can't move. Also, just out of curiosity, what happens if you run out of compressed air? I assumed it was necessary for depth keeping and to surface. If I dive just enough to turn the electric engines on, I believe the game counts that as being (underwater) and won't restore the comp air. The only major mod I'm using is RSRDC, the rest are just cosmetic things. |

yes. depending on the boat, you need to dive to 25-30 feet to be on the surface but running on battery.

If you're using stock with RSRD your prop may be blown off, go look with the cam..

... or a bent shaft (of course, it would show on the damage screen)... Try using "reverse" also - "Back emergency!" then try forward again... I had a destroyed rudder and a bent shaft one time, and used the electric like you're thinking, and would fully surface to re-charge. I made it back to Allied controlled waters with a combination of going forward for a while, and then in reverse for a time. However, I could not steer well enough to get to a base anywhere, which wouldn't have mattered much, unless I made it to my "home" port for repairs... I gave up on it finally. But do like Armistead suggests, and "send a man over the side to inspect the propellers and rudders". A dirty little secret of the game is that sometimes, in spite of diesel damage, you can run submerged fine, and the batteries never fully die. You'll be stuck at 1 knot or less, but keep going. Surface to get air back in the boat. Of course, a bent shaft or missing rudder or propeller is a "killer"

Where is the "Rescue Boat Mod" lol?
Where is "Deploy Oars"? Where is the "Send Distress Signal Mod"? Where is the "Rig Up A Sail" Mod? I remember once that happened to me in the Arctic, I notice an iceberg was about to pass us by, I thought quick and the crew and I jumped on it and sailed that back, it was doing better than the sub. We got to safe waters just before it thawed out and was lucky to be spotted by a friendly merchant, that's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it. Col.

haha, when I first played and was playing stock my prop got blown off and maybe rudder too in Manila bay. All I could do was sit there and torp ships that came by. Once out of torps, surfaced and used guns until we died...

One solution, \Data\zones.cfg file.
Hunt for datablocks like; [Rudders] Category=Propulsion Multiplier=1.000000 Flotability=0.000000 HitPoints=10 Destructible=No Armor Level=-1 Critic Flotation=0.300000 Critical=Yes FloodingTime=60 CargoType=None [Propellers] Category=Propulsion Multiplier=1.000000 Flotability=0.000000 HitPoints=20 Destructible=Yes Armor Level=-1 Critic Flotation=0.300000 Critical=Yes FloodingTime=59.999996 CargoType=None Change the armor level to 1000, no more destroyed rudders or props. The "destructable" yes or no has no effect that I can see, if it says no it can still be destroyed. |
