January 1944...Gato class out of Fremantle. Assigned to area A4 in South China Sea off Philippines. Transited via Lombok Strait(surprised it was not guarded) Makassar Strait(planes guarded it well, had to dive a lot) and then approached Sibutu Passage to transit it on surface at night. Radar made a lone contact, judging from its course and movement, patrol vessel.Attempted to skirt it but it came my way(should not have been able to see me, do they have hawkeye vision? Would make night surface attacks impossible) or radar(any chance of getting a radar warning equipment as some other mods have?)
Turned my stern toward the contact and went to GQ since became obvious could not outrun the patrol vessel(which turned out to be a Kisaragi DE). I had four of the "new" Mark 18's loaded in stern tubes. Let vessel close in until he fired a star shell, followed up by splashes. I took a final TBT bearing at 4100 yards(out of range, but DE closing at 20+ knots would solve the range) and let one torpedo loose, then ordered a dive. Waiting to see if my lone "down the throat shot" hit, we leveled off and prepared to fire more when torpedo impacted the DE, causing a large explosion and then she began to sink. Made it to patrol area and saved, need to get some sleep. Loving FOTRS thus far, great work again to team. |

CTD - it's not just a job

No, no radar detector, but the Kisaragi did... lol - What gets me about the game is that the US sub's radar operators learned to use their radar to detect other radar... that is not modeled at all...

So kisaragi detected my radar emissions or picked me up on his radar? interesting. Not sure how we can pull off night surface attacks now. lol I agree the devs should have added it, huge oversight. Would you guys consider adding the US RWR as equipment? Ducimus added it in TMO RSRD. I bourght to the idea up to him after running OM since the german side had it, why not the US? Afterall, US subs did have them. Speaking of Ducimus, does he ever pop in anymore ? |

Good job. Especially with a one torpedo kill. I feel sorry for the merchant marines I sink, but I hate escorts... love blasting them out of the water when I play career (usually Trigger Maru for me instead of FOTR).

I enjoy taking the escorts out as well, but only duel with them it out of necessity.First time I ever tried that in SH 4 was after reading "Wahoo" by O Kane where describes doing this in Wewak Harbor in early 1943. So when I had an escort charging me, I lined up for the shot and it worked lol Last time I was into a career(couple years ago) I was in TMO RSRD (with my modifications) I got into the habit of dueling with escorts, took about 6 or 7 out in my patrols, mostly with the down the throat shot. I admit I gained some contempt for escorts which nearly got me killed. I fired two Mark 18's down the throat at a Matsu class DE but he turned just right, they skimmed down each side(like something out of a movie lol) I had to crash dive, as you probably know Matsu's lay an impressive pattern of charges. Beat my boat up pretty bad, lost control a while, kept bouncing bettwen 550 feet and 600 in a Gato.Gato's crush depth is 596 if I recall, so came extremely close. Then his buddies the kaibokans arrived, which made it even worse. I limped back home with one screw and two engines working, most essential gear destroyed. TMO escorts will get ya lol. |

Nice first contact!
I started a new career as my grandfather, a US Navy sailor in WWII, Henry "Hank" DeVries. He was assigned to Pearl Harbor and given the command of the USS Perch (SS-176). His first contact went pretty well, with some excellent screenies as well. ![]() I have completed three war patrols, at the end of my third I was awarded the Navy Cross and was given the command of the USS Thresher (SS-200). Now I am on my fourth war patrol and it is June 8, 1942. I engage the enemy destroyers only if I need to. Like if I was being depth-charged- This happened actually- I blew my ballast and leveled off at 160 feet, then 80 feet, and then periscope depth where I immediately came under gunfire as soon as I raised the scope up. I picked the closet target and fired four MK.14 torpedoes, they detonated and the DD sank quickly. The rest of the escorts, probably feeling a little frightened went back to the convoy and left me alone. One DD did come back, but I quickly put him out of action as well.
