G'day guys,
I did some (very basic) tests with the Kilo and snorkelling (sorry, I say 'snorting'). A Kilo 877, while snorting, will be detected by: * a Flt 1 LA SSN at 31.2 NM * a Perry Class Frigate @ 5 kts (no EMCON) at 24 NM * a Perry Class Frigate @ 5 kts (EMCON) at 28.5 NM (I thought these numbers would be flipped!) Therefore, if a Kilo Captain was in the combat area, and needed to get to a 'safe' place to snort/snorkel (say, 40NM from the area of likely submarines - in open ocean), it would take 10 hours @ 4 kts and expend 15% of battery charge to get there). Just some food for thought; I know most people don't play long Kilo missions ![]() Stew |

Cool!
![]() So what do you mean by EMCON here (I know it means emissions control)? Active sonar? Radar? I'd also be curious to see how well sonobuoys detect it, but if I remember correctly, they have a 7 or 10 nmi hard limit on detection that I'm sure the Kilo would satisfy.

Just some FYI, the only downside to running a Prairie/Masker on a diesel boat is that it raises the temperature in the engine room by about 15 degrees F.
That and the little pin holes in the screw and hull are a pain to keep clean. Carry on. ![]() |

Thanks, Chazly - Yes, EMCON was no active sonar/radar transmission, No Emcon was transmitting - It was just through the mission editor, so I think it's 'all or nothing', with regards to Active Sonar and Surface Search Radar...
I tried the same test with some aircraft, I don't think the Surface Search Radar works at picking up snorkels in RA; I believe it can in real life. Counter-detected by Seahawk - 1.2 NM (flying directly over me; this must have been either visual or MAD detection) Counter-detected by Orion - 2.1 NM (this must have been either visual or MAD too) Thanks ET2SN - very interesting! I had to look up Prairie/Masker, interesting stuff! Cheers guys, Stew |
