My dad was on a River Class DDE at that period of the war - he told me about the one U-Boat kill he witnessed. It went pretty much like you described, except that they used the Squid to kill him; it happened in the Irish sea in '44.

Lots of U-Boats checked out that way.

I know this is rather off topic but...it wasn't so much belief in his invulnerability that led MvR to make such poor judgement calls that fateful day, 21 April 1918. It was more a case of combat fatigue -after all he had seen and been through- and the ever-felt pressure of performing well for the troops who found some relief when they peered upwards to see the red Fokker downing another victim.

Back to Manock's experience...

I hope you don't play DID...! The wrong decisions you listed as the causes of your untimely demise sound -rather worryingly- a tad too familiar...

I always go for just one more merchant...even when I see the escort ploughing towards me.

Wow good story and i fully simpathise.
I play this sim very caushusly and think of my crew there wives and little sprites.
I want the glory but i also want to survive a fine line between the both.

The good thing about a sim is when its over it realy isnt but for a real u-boot captain well there not mutch left after dead.

I have learned a great deal of paitence and perseverance with playing this sim and have survived through being this way.

My real glory is getting my crew and ones self back alive.

I've never been seriously sunk either. My girlfriend got a bit pregnant once though.

If you're using external view, flank speed ahead when they come down. If you're being good and not cheating then yep, fraid you're screwed...

The head wound kept causing trouble right up till the end. It also ended his sense of invulnerability, if he had any left by July 1917. Nausea and headaches were his most frequent tormentors.
As for unable to compete in the air, well, I disagree. How many did MvR get after his headwound? A good 23. Admittedly his victories in the remainder of 1917 weren't numerous or impressive (6), but this was during his main period of convalescence. He didn't score between 30-11-17 and 12-3-18, but his first victory in the Michael Offensive heralded a return to form for the old master: in less than six weeks, from 12-3 to 21-4, MvR downed 17 adversaries!

It is of course possible that his head wound was a factor in his lapse of judgement, but it will never be certain. It is clear however, that his head wound did not impede his ability to down enemy opponents.

I know it's off topic, but I just looooove that WWI talk! If you're interested, check out www.theaerodrome.com, especially its forum. It has been the best WWI air war site since 1997-1998.

Kind regards,

Eichenlaub

HMCS,

I don't think it is modelled. Just out of curiosity, what exactly is the difference between HH and Squid?

Kind regards,

Eichenlaub

Nice story!

The hedgehogs are brutal! They dont cause as much damage as a direct hit from a dc, but they hit freakishly often, so they are far worse.

I once got hedgehog`ed whilst on the phone. :rotfl:The poor dude on the other end of the line learned alot of foul Norwegian language.

What about throwing off the scent by letting out the debris? How does this work?
I've tried it and it says it's not available.

KevinB,

The decoys are called BOLD devices. They aren't available early in the war but should become so from 1942 onwards. Each successive type of BOLD gives you more time.

Kind regards,

Eichenlaub
