Al Zarquawi became a martyr today, the victim of a US ari attack in Iraq. Press conference at 15:00 GMT (17:00 European Summer Time).

This will not end the violence between Shiítes and Suni's in Iraq, but might well unbalance the foreign Jihad fighters...

Good news anyway for everybody who hates terrorism.

I doubt that Iraqi citizens and even many of the local insurgents view Abu Musab al-Zarqawi as a martyr. To them he was probably more of a pain in the arse.

Importantly it offers much needed credibility to the new Iraqi Government with the Iraqi people. The Governement needs wins like this to present to the populace as evidence of progress. The Iraqi people however now need further tangible progress on the crucial issues of security, basic services such as electricity and water, and employment.

I'm afraid, though, that it will end up being far less useful to the American side than it seems - and maybe more useful to the other side. But I guess it's the kind of boost that they need to improve opinion at home.

I recall a similar situation where the famed Chechen leader Djokhar Dudaev was killed in an air raid by the Russians, but it'd be oh-so-wrong to say that it was even nearly the end of it. Things got worse, in fact.

It's a bit funny. I find the use of "father", in the Islamic sense, to be a perjorative; not many "fathers" in Christianity wield an AK-47 in this day and time. This context in their nom de guerre has been one of the most enlightening things I've learned about Islam since 9/11.

As for Zarqawi, I think it's more disrepectful toward him to disavow his nom de guerre, and use his birth name of "Ahmed Fadhil" (and even more disrepectful to truncate his father's name from his birth name). Nothing special about this jihadist; there's 100 million more where that came from, and another 300 million more in childhood training. He's just a statistic.

Nothing more than a minor inconvenience al-Qaida is like a hydra, you cut off one of the hydra's heads and another one pops up. You need to kill the hydra out right and that is near on impossible. A short term victory nothing more, means nothing in the long term.
