Default Historical Question...

When a Uboat commander "upgraded" to a new boat, what was done with the old one?

If in good enough condition, was it handed down to a new skipper or was it scrapped for parts?...

EDIT: If handed down, any instances of famous skippers commanding the same Uboat at different times?...

Is this a serius question?

Well, the boat really wasn't build up for the certain skipper and scrapped after the captain stop using it...

U48 is one example. You can have a look in the Uboat.net for example.

Yes, it's a serious question.

EDIT: I'm not really certian that I'd want a used Uboat who's seen 20 patrols and umpteen depth charges. Granted, not my choice, but certainly a psychological thorn ("How deep can I go in this old tub before she crushes?...).

Ok.

There were two possibilities:

1. Keeping the boat in the front with a new skipper
2. Withdrawing the boat and sending it to be used as a school or experimental boat in the Ostsee (don't remember what's it called in english, "east sea" between central Europa and Skandinavia).

I have also noticed, after the loss of Prien, Kretschmer and Schepke, many of the VIIB-class boats were withdrawn to Baltic (I remember, I remember!!!) in the next few months. I'm not sure was it releated with growing losses that the older boats were withdrawn. At least Dönitz plan was to send Prien and U47 to Baltic after Priens last patrol. But papa Prien never make it home...

So, your idea is just correct.

Do you mean "the baltic sea"?

Commanders were sometimes rotated, just ilke a crew. A commander didnt keep a boat with him, nor his crew. his crew constantly rotated, it was the best way for the newer men to learn from more experienced ones, and not keep all your best experience in one basket so to speak.

You can look at just about any commander theres information avialable on.
For instance, this man commanded two different boats.

Or U107, had 4 different commanders.
