Default Blidge Rat Attack

Hello ALL.

Please allow me to introduce myself. I call myself " The Blockade Runner, and I am a newbie to this game.

I had to upgrade my PC just to run it. But it has been well worth it. This game rocks

Anyway I am in my first career mode, Having passed al of the Naval Academy exams, And I have chosen the 1st flotilla instead of the 7th. I know there are probably some groans but since I am new I like the simplicty of the type II U boat. ( less crew to manage, ect)

I have become very good at stretching the range of this boat, I have been using my Electric engiens with all the crew I can as much as possible. I am 3/4 of the way to Scapa Flow and I still have 75 % fuel. I think this is good for a type 2.

Ive discovered that this U boat is too slow to intercept contacts unless they are discovered very very close. Heck im only geeting like 9 knts outta this unless I use flank speed which I never do.

Now I come to the point of this post
I am going to attack Scapa Flow!
It is in my assigned patrol zone anyway. I figure since my U boat is too slow to intercept than kill the ships in harbor. What I need is advice / Tips for anyone who has been sucessful at Scapa
Like the layout, what to do ect.

It is Sept 1939, I fugre the earlier I attack it the better, right? :hmm:

Unless you are running a mod dont bother as you only have about 1 in 10 chance of seeing anything worthwhile.

First time I went to Scapa with my IIA, I found the Revenge.

Sank it with 3 torpedos.

If your running a mod something like GW I wouldn't bother there's nothing there most of the time, and also consider wisely which way your going enter scapa.

Scapa usually does me in.. either I get too greedy or I end up having issues with the depth there. But, you never know what you find when you enter ports. Could be months of nothing and one day you could win the lottery.

I prefer Loch Ewe easier to get it in and there's Capital ships in there too.

Welcome aboard Blockade Runner! I started playing about a week ago and am doing the EXACT same thing you are.

One of the things I have learned from here though, are that using the electric engines doesn't conserve fuel when you factor in the fuel expended in recharging the boat. I get better fuel consumption rates by just traveling at ahead slow on the surface the whole way.

And you may notice that going a little faster than the ahead slow speed will save even more fuel.

If the ahead slow speed is 7, then see how far that will take you. Then click on about 8, and check that. You should see a positive difference.

I say go into Scapa. You should do it at least once. You might find a cruiser or something. It's a once-per-career kinda thing. I cheat and look up the ship dates in the SCR layer and find out if anything's in there ....it's a serious pain in the arse to get in there so I don't go unless it's worth it. Lock Ewe is also fun but it's a bit hairier to get in etc. At some point you'll find out that it's much easier to catch a BB at sea than in port.

Default harbors

To get the most info from the game, you should install SH3 Gen. It will tell you what ships are in what harbors.
Several mods will put ships in the harbors, including Grey Wolves, IUB 1.03, Harbor traffic, and some more.
Of course you should also use JSGME and SH3 CMDR to get the most fun from the game.
