Just a few minutes ago, I was shot at by no less than 8 missiles by a chinese Song-class submarine. CIWS shot them all down because at only like 8 miles from the Song, they didn't run out of gas. No Chaff. No nothing. WOW! GO CIWS!

I've survived 16 tasms from a LA, with chaff and ciws doing everything. It doesn't fare so well against higher speed missiles however.
There are problems with lead calculations all over this game.

I think the CIWS in the game is a fairly good representation of its actual performance in regards to the speed of the target and the weapon's effectiveness.
There IS a reason after all that the Navy is going to RAM/ESSM for the final defense ring over the cheaper CIWS systems.

Hmmm how many ready-to shoot burst are stored in Phalanx's ammo magasine ? Without reloading ? Is it as much as 12 rounds ? And can it fire 12 bursts in a row without smoking the barrels ? I once saw a picture of Vulcan gun on a test stand after loong burst - glowing red and orange hot :-).

The CIWS may miss but if you launch lots of chaff and flares you are almost invulnerable to missile attack. Just make sure you reload fast because more missiles will probably be on the way.
My strategy for missiles is to first detect them on radar, then launch any sm2's at the incoming target if possible, maneuver the ship into a head on or running away position, launch flares and chaff, maneuver away and then let the CIWS do its thing. At least with this method you have about a 90% chance of surviving a 3 missile salvo of kitchen missiles, if you fire half of your chaff and flares. If you fire all of the chaff and flares and you manage to get an sm2 kill it's 100%. Similar story on the klub's but they're a bit more difficult. |

It holds 5600 rounds in one belt. Takes a long time to reload. It fires all 5600 rounds in 1 minute.

No its water cooled apparently stops it getting so hot the barrels melt, and they are not supposed to fire for more than 45 seconds at a time in short sharp bursts so ive red.
