Default Shell.sim

First off, I would like to thank all of those who help us modders with little to no pay or reward. A special thank you to Subsim.com for giving a forum for all of us to come together to share an immensely, invaluable amount of knowledge for all to share.. With that being said, back to the matter at hand, shell.sim. Is there a way to tell which ones are my shells, and which ones are from say a destroyer or battleship? The file is in the same folder as depthcharges.sim so I dont want to inadvertantly lower their value as far as punch power or damage. I am trying to make things a little more difficult for me (More realistic) and I want to make sure that I change the values of the correct shells.

Well, I don't know what Jimbob posted, but to find the shell/ammunition of the gun in reference, you first need to follow the specific guns ID (the 0x000000000000 ID number) to its .sim file, and find the particular shell type you wish to use for the gun (AP; HE; AA). Whatever ID you have there (which will be different than the gun ID), you use that ID to glean through the Shells.sim file to find that particular shell.

If your working within a mod to put your own spin on it, you may find added folders that contain different ammunition/shells that you need to look through to find the particular shell your looking for. Use the "Search ID" feature in S3D to locate the ID if you can't find it in the stock Shells.sim file.

Since your looking for changing the Damage qualities of a shell, you'll find it in the Shells.zon file.....same idea, follow the particular shell's ID.

Thank you CapnScurvy, as usual you information is always useful. I had forgotten that I was working within a mod to start with.. Sometimes I have flashes of brilliance, other times I have to sit and wonder how I ever got my shoes tied.

Nothing easy about some of this, but try to remember to follow the objects ID through the various files and you'll usually come out OK. Since the guns .sim file breaks down the three basic shells into Armor Piercing, High Explosive, or Antiaircraft (the Star Shells aren't used on the American side of play) then each of these three shell types have different ID's you use to locate them in their shells.sim file. You can really get confused when you want to find the shells animation explosive parameters in the particles.dat file because those ID's come out of the shells.sim file...again different than the actual shell ID. Best to keep notes on what's what when your digging that far along.

Default Modding help

Aye Aye CapnScurvy, now I remember why it took me so long to get things rolling the first time I started to MOD this. SH3 wasn't this bad to do.

Default Deck Gun Load Out

Now I have poured over every file that I can find and have probably missed this at least twice now, but does the IJN use the same shells that the US Subs do (as far as shells.sim is concerned)? I cannot find any section that references the the IJN ammo for destroyers, gun boats, battleships, etc. Could some one please tell me where to find this information. I am looking to make their ammo punch a little harder and make bigger holes. To complete a campaign with a superior adversary will take every trick, tactic, and good luck omen to survive. I might even be able to live to offer a few new tactics for survival. I just need to know where their ammo information is to tinker with it.

You'll need to make a list of the guns the AI Jap ships use, and others, to make sure they aren't using the same shells that the subs use. Open each of the Jap warships found in the Sea folder and read the .eqp file (it opens with Notepad).

For example, find the Data/Sea/NBB_Yamato/NBB_Yamato.eqp file. Your main large guns are usually going to have the M01 leading the specific gun type name (that's found in the specific .dat file that holds the model of the gun). The "M" series can run through M02, M03 and so on. The first gun is listed "M01 18in_Triple_Base_Jp". The "18in_Triple_Base_ Jp" is the name of the gun found in its .dat file.

The A01 series guns are usually the smaller AA/Flak guns......you could have dozens of them on a ship the size of the Yamato. But probably only a hand full of different types....like the "25mm_Single_Base_Jp".

Anyway, you probably won't need the big 18inch gun to compare the shell used to the subs 3, 4, or 5" DG. But the smaller guns and AA armaments you should look into.

Look through the "ShipParts" folder to see if you can find the AI's set of guns. You may need to look through the "Guns and Radars" files too. I'd look at the German and Allies side also for what guns they use before thinking you've found all the possible guns that use the same shells as the subs armaments

Default Success

After many nights pouring over the information, I have created the ultimate monster, screw up once you'll be with Davey Jones sharing his locker MODS. Lol. I hit a convoy, salvo of torpedos into the tanker, down she went. took out one of the escorts with 2 stern torpedos. Fired a few rounds from my deck gun into a freighter in her engine compartment to slow her down then went to dive. During my dive back down, conning tower took a shell from a merchant, well, lets just say the Davey says hello. Damn armed merchants.
