Russia has an interesting proposal, banning smoking for people born in 2014 and after, full stop. Will be watched by a lot of other countries to see if they can actually enforce it.

Here is a link to a NY Times story on the ban: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/12/w...ttes.html?_r=0 I don't think a ban will work; we have two very large Russian settlements here in the Los Angels area, one in Reseda, in the San Fernando Valley, and one near where I live in the Hollywood/West Hollywood area; there is also a large settlement in the adjacent city of Glendale. After observing the residents of those areas for a number of years, I think you'll be able to get a gun out of the cold dead hands of an NRA member before you could make those walking chimneys give up their ciggies. There has been a law banning smoking in bars for years, but the Russians (along with a lot of Asian groups) try to defy the law. The management of the bars will often know of police or other enforcement visits beforehand and will hide the ash trays and packs of cigarettes away before the cops arrive; its like a 'cat and mouse game', reminiscent of those Prohibition scenes in old movies... Maybe on that not only coughs, but also sprays you with water?... <O>

A few years back, I worked with someone who is about my age who had just finally managed to quit smoking after having smoked since he was 16 years old; he had some down time on our project and he set up a spreadsheet to calculate an estimate of how much he had spent on ciggies and such; the final amount was very impressive and even more so when he used a US Gov't table to re-calculate the older dollars into today's dollars; for several days thereafter all we heard was him muttering things like "I coulda had a couple of really good cars!"..."I coulda had more for my house down payment!"... etc....
What was interesting was I had a similar experience with a musician acquaintance who had quit using drugs and had done a similar tally; IIRC, the totals were not that far off each other... <O>
