Default Shambolic start to Rio Games amid queues, security scares

Quote:
The Rio Olympic Games got off to a shambolic and nervous start on Saturday, with organizers apologizing to angry fans kept waiting hours at security checkpoints to enter venues while, outside, shootings and bomb scares kept visitors on edge.

Athletes competed in front of empty stands early on the first day of full competition as spectators complained of missing their events while queueing for security clearance.

The morning after a dazzling opening ceremony, organizers admitted to dropping the ball, with only a few hundred spectators making their way into venues such as the gymnastics arena and the beach volleyball on iconic Copacabana beach.

Outside, lines stretched for several blocks as fans stood in full sun and security staff struggled. Organizers blamed a lack of coordination between security personnel, including the police, Games staff and private security firms.

It will be interesting to follow how this will work out in a variety of perspectives.

The financial markets in Brazil don't care one bit.
Doing very well.

Investors and Olympic games don't care about each other.

As for the Games, ask disgruntled local Police ("Welcome to Hell" signage posted at Rio's airport to welcome visitors, by them, no less), Chinese basketball team dodging a gang shootout after arrival....the list goes on.

Oh how could i forget, a torchbearer showing his dislike for his government by....dropping his pants. in the middle of an official ceremony.

Probably similar to the awarding of the 2018 World Cup to Russia but I doubt any public outrage will be tolerated or allowed.

My left tired eye opened a tiny little bit to notice the start of the games. The start of the games was indicated by a news I picked up: that the Brazilian government had ordered all doping tests on Brazilian athletes to be suspended since I think four weeks before the opening ceremony.

And immediately my eye lid fell down, and shut again.

Fell pretty much the same here but I will watch any events/finals the UK has a chance to win a medal in

I know there is lots of dirty things in Brazil not only in the politics and among other authorities-thinking on bribery

I'm watching as much as I can, ´cause its the Olympic and that's something special.

A few days ago I meet a turist from somewhere in Denmark. He told me his friend or was it a relative, who lived in Brazil according to this person, the people in Brazil are the most humble people he had met.

He told me about how the life in these poor "ghettoes" goes and how they had some "un-written" laws that almost everyone followed.

One of them was a person should never commit robbery against a poor
If he does he is hated and are haunted out of the area-if they find him.

I myself think it's time the IOC turn 180 degrees around and instead of countries apply for holdning a Olympic Games ,the IOC could take 10 candidates which complies with some strict rules.

When these 10 candidates who have been under supervision throughout a while, the IOC can pick 3 out of these 10 and send them a message if they would be interested in the host of the xxx Olympic games etc

It might turn out to be a Catch 22

Any country that can run a proper Olympics is probably too smart to hold one.

Today we have organisation that keeps an eye on every country in the world when it comes to human right stuff, bribery a.s.o a.s.o

My idea is IOC use these organisation to get a rightful picture of a coming candidate

In the end the IOC pick three candidate which can deny or say yes to hold the xxx Olympic games.
After each of these countries have said yes or no to this offer, the IOC makes the final decision and decide which of these 3 candidates should have the xxx Olympic games

I even have an idea of some kind of a money foundation which could give economical help to a country/town who have been chosen by the IOC.
A foundation each member of IOC pays to.
