Icon11 This War of Mine

Well, I'm totally sucked into the game, but struggling to get past Day 7. I have cleaned out the easy pickings and Marko my scavenger keeps getting shot when I try to raid a place with food. I wish one of these guys was a prepper and had some of the essentials before the war broke out.

Some people don't get the luxury of prepping. And some preppers don't get the luxury of survival.

I must pick this one up sometime though, it does look very good, very on point given the situation in Syria and the Ukraine at the moment...but then again, I guess with the subject it has picked you can't really go wrong because there'll always be a war somewhere, and there'll always be people having to survive in the middle.

Bosnians never expected that Yugoslavia would be torn apart like that. Prepping was an unknown concept back then (and it still is)

Well, "prepping" does not necessarily mean going crazy and building a bunker. As I suggested back in the now deleted Preppers thread, taking a few common sense precautions against a relatively likely situation is the kind of prepping that could and should be done. For example, if you live on the Gulf Coast like we do, you certainly prep each spring for hurricanes (extra water, canned food, batteries, lights, fuel and generator). I am sure most people in Sarajevo began prepping as things got worse, it is just not reflected in this game.

Don't worry, I'm a prepper too. I have a light bug out box, a collection of knives, I sleep with an axe near my bed and I have a contingency plan to raid my neigbours house for his rifles (and prevent him from raiding my well stocked pantry).

The war in Bosnia started after a decade of economic decline. Bosnia was also the poorest republic inside Yugoslavia and having a full pantry was a luxury even the wealthiest republic (Slovenia) had some trouble realising.
Couple that with the fact you're a low wage worker in downtown Sarajevo and having stocks ''for an emergency'' means you'll be spending money you'd otherwise spend on things like heating and children.

Seriously? You plan to rob your armed neighbor? That's kinda messed up. Ok, turn in your Morality Badge.

Pre-emptive strike.
I read Sun Tzu

And Machiavelli so... what morality badge

What I was trying to say is that in areas most prone to see a war, prepping is almost always nearly impossible even in peace time.

This War of Mine is fantastic, it hooked me for a whole week and felt very realistic - however I may think I can judge this.
It certainly made me think a lot about this scenario and how close to my door step this is actually happening every day.

A game everyone should have played.

I've gotten to Day 39 several times, but by this time, there are no more items to scavenge without fighting someone. I guess it's time to kill or be killed.

I cannot send Marko out after he has killed someone, he has fallen apart and has to have his food brought to him

I'm going to pack the female lawyer off to the Military Outpost tonight.

Note: if you have a scavenger killed during the night phase, quickly hit Alt F4 as soon as possible, and the game will close. When you relaunch it, it will start over the morning before. No way I'm starting over from the very beginning.

Losing someone doesn't mean you gotta restart though?
It just means you need to adapt.
Accept the challenge instead of circumventing exactly what makes the game great.
(humble suggestion)

Ah, true, the stakes are higher if one cannot restart at the last morning, but I don't have the patience or time to play the first 7 days over and over. Plus, there is no training mode, these poor guys are so helpless, I have to learn in real combat how they will handle a shovel or knife, and the enemy seems to be pretty competent.

Made it to Day 45 and the Ceasefire but I had to spill some blood. No way around it, That damn Bruno must have his cigarettes.

Try reading Nash too.

Those two scenarios you have imagined are far from an Equilibrium.

...well, started a new game, blast it, Arica was shot down on Day 14 for simply walking past a guy in the supermarket.

Made it to the Ceasefire again, with a lot of food, weapons, and meds. My people will probably be the new crime syndicate now.
