Default The verdamnt channel (GW)

Does anyone have a map of the minefield between Calais and Dover, or know how to get through withough getting blown to hell? I hate to make the long trip north if I dont have to.

I've done it, and let me tell you, it sucks...
but if you must -

It was my experience that only the east end of the Channel was mined. The field seemed to start just N/NW of Calais and continued well east of there (there seemed to be a break and then a continuation, or perhaps a second field, at the very eastern end before the channel widened again). I survived by going to 15 meters and using my observation scope beneath the surface to spot the mines. I had to creep along at 16X compression. I tried 32X, but it was just too hairy. The first mines you encounter as you go east are set to be more shallow, nearer the surface. The second or continued field further east was laid towards the bottom only a few meters off the floor. Word of advice: if night falls on you and it gets too dark to see at depth - stop. Tuck in your crew and wait for dawn to proceed.

I used to use the Channel all the time in SHII and in the stock SHIII; I won't do it anymore. The one experience was quite sufficient to make the Scottish route look very appealing.

I took some screenies of the scarier moments. I'll try to post them, if I can find a host.

Why 32X compression is a bad idea in the Channel:

I lightened both of those screen shots before I posted them. In-game, the mines were harder to spot.

I used to love the channel, but it became too dangerous. I opened up the map details in the editor to see where the mines were. I'm pretty sure there are also minefields in the center of the channel at a few points. YOu have to zig-zag properly to get through. Problem is, when I close the editor and get into the game, I forget where they are. As you say, the east end is particularly dangerous. I don't know of a reliable way into the channel. However - I have a feeling that mines are safe when you are running on the surface. Thinking back, I'm pretty sure I've never hit a mine while surface running - it was all at PD. Often what I'll do if I think i'm in a mine area is run on the surface at flank, at night, and then dive to PD and stop all day. Might work. Might not. On the other hand, after being mined in the channel I was stopped during the day for repairs, and to wait for night. I spotted a cargo ship moving through the channel - on fire. Pretty sure it hit a mine. Deep draft?

Later in the war they mine the round-about-way out of the North Sea - a long string of mines between scotland and greenland. But the chances of hitting one are very slim.

Nice pics!!

Yep. Me, too. I guess we'll have to consider it a concession to the higher realism of GW. I would imagine that, in real life, the Channel became a pretty unfriendly place for uboats pretty quickly.

Thanks re: the pics. That second one was a particularly scary encounter. I was using time compression and was on him before I knew it. My initial reaction was to order back emergency - bad idea; it tipped my bow up towards the mine! I calmed down and backed slowly out of there.

Mi advise , don't use the channel after March 1940, and around
1941 The coast of France is in great part ocupied by the German , from that moment when all the ports are german you can Navigate near the French coast... and even some times you'll have some anemy ships contacts...
