Default Greetings from a Hearts of Iron addict.

I swear Paradox games are gateway drugs. After countless thousands of hours (literally) invested into Hearts of Iron 3, I eventually got irritated at how absolutely useless submarines are in that game and decided to do some research into them. Fast forward a few weeks and here I am, poised to invest who knows how much time into submarine sims. Something is wrong with me, I'm sure.

To those who aren't aware, HOI3 is a fantastic WW2 sim from the folks at Paradox Interactive, responsible for the far more popular Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings games. You are in control of any nation throughout WW2, and it allows for some amazing strategic planning and thinking... for land armies.

Naval warfare, however, is somewhat neglected. Most of the time all you have to do is throw 6 or so aircraft carriers in a doomstack and you're invincible. Similar results can be a achieved with 5 battleships and a bunch of screens, although unlike CVs, which are all but impossible to sink under any circumstances, battleships do take damage. Whichever you choose, however, it remains a fact that submarines are all but useless. Sure, you can get them sinking lots of convoys, for a time, but 3 flotillas of submarines can be sunk in an hour by one destroyer if caught. Not ever worth the investment.

Anyway, I didn't mean to ramble on this much in this post, I just thought I'd shout out the reason for my newfound infatuation for submarines into the void to nobody in particular. Apparently they were a lot more useful than the aforementioned game would have you believe, and certainly far more interesting. So, greetings, salutations, hello, and ahoy hoy from a Canadian WW2 nerd with far too much spare time.

Shout all you want. If we all didn't love some wargame we wouldn't be here.

Oh, and Welcome Aboard!

I've played a lot of global strategic level games. HOI, A World Divided, World in Flames. Most of them don't really do submarine warfare justice. Some barely do naval warfare justice.

About the only exception would be War in the Pacific AE. Unfortunately, they give you every sub in the theater so it become quite a micromanagement task by 1944. However, they did get the role of what submarines can and can't do right. Perhaps not perfect, but better than most.

Welcome aboard!

Default Hello, RoflCopter4

No, that was interesting stuff: I'm not into strategy games myself, not being a very cerebral type (although I did recently get Rome, Total War Gold to tuck away in case I ever change my mind).

Welcome aboard!

Are you trying to get me to waste even more of my time? Now I'm going to have to look into this game. God save me.

Hearts of Iron is not for everyone, to be sure. It's been unkindly described as a spreadsheet simulator. However it can be great fun for those who can stomach the micromanagement.

And about the name: I chose this as a name for my first ever forum account when I was 14 many, many moons ago, and the name has stuck with me. It's terrible but it's mine, I suppose.

Anyway, thanks to all.

I love the HOI series, with the second one being my favorite, but spreadsheet simulator isn't a far off description. You need to LOVE tedious games for most Paradox games but they are oh so rewarding. Especially when you make your own history as Germany and fight a war on 4 fronts.
