Default Hydrophone Broken?

Hi all.

SH4 version 1.4. Mods are mostly graphical and audio. A few Webster's mods too.

First patrol in 1941. Sub is a S-18 class. Have taken no damage whatsoever. Got curious because S.O. hadn't reported any sound contacts all the way from Cavite up around northern tip of Luzan and into Philippine Sea even though traffic was heavy-ish along northwestern coast of island. Got really curious when he reported nothing even as we neared a small merchant that I knew had to be just north of us. Merchant was spotted and in visual range but no report from S.O. Manned hydrophone myself at approximately 3500 yards and heard nothing. Re-checked intermittently every few hundred yards and still nothing.

Haven't sailed a S-18 since circa 2007. Please someone tell me this sub's hydrophone is worthless by design or else I'll fear it's a bug.

He never said he was on the surface.

If the merchant is going less than half it programed top speed you will not hear them. If the code runs a max speed of 12 knots on a particular vessel and the ship is traveling at 5 you will not hear it. Since you do not know how this is coded without opening the file and looking there is no way of knowing if this is the case but it is general knowledge that this no sound issue occurs and is caused by this condition in the code.

I would suggest running SH4 version 1.5 and adding some good mega mods for a good immersion into the game.

Thank you both.

Yes I was running on the surface. Hit him three times with the deck gun which started a small fire on his deck, but finished him off with a torpedo. Calculated and inputted his speed as 6 knots, but unsure if he was running so slow because of damage from the deck gun or if that was his regular cruising speed. Will submerge next time I spot something to test hydrophone underwater. The many joys of the S-18 class. Thanks very much again.

New contact made just 11 nm from my current position. Went to periscope depth, TC'ed for a few seconds, checked hydrophone and there he was bearing 24 degrees. The light lit up such a beautiful green. My hydrophone works!

Welcome aboard, Crumpler!

Aside from the peculiarities of the sh4 hydrophones, you shouldn't have to rely on them that much. Early war US sound gear wasn't that good; mean detection ranges were something like 7,000 yds., or so. You should usually see the targets, before you hear them.
