Default i need help with the grid system

hey guys, I've noticed in sh3 that there are grids on the map and I know how to find a big grid like AM 17, but I don't know how to locate the smaller grids like AM 1714. How do I find the smaller grids like AM3214?

Each 'big grid' is sub-divided into nine smaller and equal sub-grids, each measuring 1/3 of latitude and longitude W to E and N to S of the big grid.

Using grid AN55 as an example, from west to east and north to south the sub-grids would look like this:

[551-] [552-] [553-]

[554-] [555-] [556-]

[557-] [558-] [559-]

The final level down follows the same principle: equal divisions of each sub-grid into one-thirds on both axis'. For example, sub-grid AN551- would break down like this:

[5511] [5512] [5513]

[5514] [5515] [5516]

[5517] [5518] [5519]

There is a mod that superimposes a grid on the nav map but I always draw my own when I feel the need, which is rarely.

Tycho has a mod for a nifty little tool which lets you read map locations to 6 characters (AAXXXX). It's called GridXXXX. You can download it here:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=4196

Honestly, though, I have the tool installed and would love to have an excuse to use it. When is a 6-character grid position ever needed? You can't enter it into status reports or use it in SH3Log. Does anyone know of of a real in-game use for this tool? Thanks.

In-game use, no!
I use four digit, because I write patrol log on paper.
In the game this is seen only after patrol, where I edit Log_?.cfg with SH3Log05.exe and manually. But that is a very short version, only for sunken ships. (Because I'm lazy) Full log with all events, remains on papers.

Tycho, thank you for the nifty little tool. I too use it for my own enjoyment. But I'd sure like to have something in the game that wouldn't choke on a full grid location. I may try it in SH3Log and see what happens.

I use it for the WaW groups radio reports. After many years playing the sim, I can usually eyeball the grid fairly accurately but, this mod takes all the guesswork out of it. I like it!

Here is what I use. Just follow the instructions as noted under the grid layout.
