I think you'll also find that as gaming communities go this one is a bit on the high side, the average age tending to be mid-to-upper 30s.

Maturity. That's probably the main reason I fell in with this community so comfortably. That, and the sense of "family" if you will. It's a bit more welcoming here I think than most other forums I've frequented.

Edit: "Welcome to Subsim. Pull up a chair and have a beer.", or something like that. That's the sense I get of this place.

I've seen a couple that were similar in tone, mostly either history buffs or model builders. I think a group dedicated to something other than just "killing" each other tends to be more helpful and less tolerant of people causing trouble just because they can.

There's that, too. There are a lot of common interests here.

This site is also policed. Sometimes by the "official" mods and sometimes by the members themselves. Trouble makers ultimately seem to go away and not all of them are keel-hauled.

A community can't exist without standards and those willing to "encourage" its members to abide by the standards. That's the difference between a community and just a web forum.

As much as I get annoyed at GT, it is hardly the worst on the Internets Tubes... not even close.

Agreed, GT is all that bad when compared to some I've frequented in years gone past.

I think we have a lot of older wiser members here than most forums.

Just be careful not to drop the soap, or you'll find it a lot sooner than you expected.

Yeap! It's a Darwinian "thingy"! Those who survive are better suited to the environment!

Subsim is indeed a nice friendly place (I don't come here as often as I used to, generally because I wouldn't know what to say in the GT xD I hang around for the games now and then.)

I'd say the general average age also plays into it too. There isnt really any pissed-off, loudmouth hormonal teenagers here. Then again, it also means the viewpoints of people here are pretty stagnant, and there tends to be alot of circular arguing. By your 40s or 50s, most people already have the values and opinions they're gonna have till they throw dirt on top of them. So there isnt much use arguing, and eventually alot of people on subsim have learned to just stay out of things and instead peruse the more lighthearted threads, like model railroads.

Sailor Steve and CaptainMattJ have nailed it IMHO.

Fighter planes attract more kids, big and little. The more mature element does run the SAS1946 site and manages a lot of activity. However, we are often so outnumbered by kids it can sometimes be like baby-sitting. Its good to see young people interested in aviation and history though. I can assure you the majority there are a very enthusiastic, yet relaxed bunch and the diversity of nationalities is also astonishing. In Admin alone we have staff from every continent representing over 15 countries. Thank goodness for Google-Translate!

The full age range of members sees many of them well into their 70s, and they can also be cranky to deal with at times! With new versions of Il2 and a great deal of modding going on, there is also a very technically dynamic atmosphere with new gear being produced and tested all the time. This encourages a great amount of debate, some arguments, but always a mature, logical approach to differing ideas.

Subsim is wonderful break from the world up top. Playing sub campaigns has re-informed my perspective on the navy and air roles in WWII. In Il2 412 we have our water looking as good as SH5 too!

My kid gave me his headphones while playing a game... you cannot believe the abuse and language these 'kids' were throwing at each other.

The virtual aviation industry in general is a decent place too, but there are the anomalies.

It's the virtual pongoes where I see the highest ratio of abuse nutters.
Was playing the old Red Orcehstra on one map (sniper), and had abuse hurled at me from every quarter, as I wasn't where they wanted me - I couldn't get there without getting shot.
Next map I examined which side they were, joined the opposite side, and sniped the hell outa them. Shoot, run and hide.. shoot, run.. They couldn't track me - they were upset!!
