Don't know if any of you have seen this one. It's only about 5 min. long, but pretty spectacular. Germans were some of the first to use color (then veeery expensive) film.

There was a magazine published by the Germans in the War called "Signal",they had loads of colour stills of all arms of the German State. There should be some on the net i would think.

Default Youtube footage

Sorry about that guys. I didn't realize the link wasn't working. Here's another way: Go to youtube, use their search function and type in "uboat color footage". There are a couple of short movies in there that show some really spectacular "Torpedo Treffen" and other things. A couple of the shots look like they had afixed an underwater camera to the railing on the con as it is taking a dive. I didn't know if any of you had seen some of this before. I know it's still there, because I bookmarked the page and just looked at it. Well worth looking for.

I also found on youtube a full length movie made in Germany in the early fifties, I think, about Günther Prien and Courageous. Don't know if it has english subtitles, haven't watched it yet. Enjoy!

I have a feeling this is not real colour footage just repainted. some of that footage is stock footage shot in black and white - then touched up.

That is entirely possible. It would take a film expert to tell. I do know the germans in the thirties were really into developing (no pun intended) color film technology. I think I've probably seen a lot more color film (at least snapshots) made by the germans than anything done by the allies. Most of them are government and military shots taken 'cause few people could afford them. The cost of color film of any sort was way out there.

The Germans did use a lot more colour film than you would think, they were at the forefront of Photography.
